1 Overview
The N3500 alarm & monitoring system is a modular system and can be used as data
acquisition system, monitoring system, control system or as a measuring, monitoring and
control system.

The N3500 architecture consists of various system modules, which can be combined in a
great variety of ways. It can be used as a single system (e.g. data acquisition, alarm system
or safety system) or multi-systems (e.g. Central monitoring system). Other types of integrated
systems such as IAMCS (Integrated Alarm Monitoring and Control System) are also possible.

2. System Configurations
The system is makes up of modular structures which can be configured differently to meet
various requirements of customers.

Figure 1 shows the block diagram of the general system.

Figure 1: Block diagram of a general system.

2.1. Master/Slave Station Computer

The computer(s) installed at the ECR or/and Bridge work as the master of the monitoring
system. If there are more than one computer installed, only the first two computers work as
Master and Slave computers while the rest of the computers act as repeaters. These two

Page 6 / 27

computers basically calculate the data received from the I/O modules and display the
information accordingly.

The Master and Slave computers basically work as a redundancy for each other. In the even
if the Master computer fails, the Slave computer will automatic become the Master and take
over it responsibility.

2.2. I/O Modules

The I/O modules are usually installed in the engine room or ECR. These modules constituted
with DC/DC power supply, microcomputer, two CAN communication interfaces and signal
acquisition interface.

All the signals acquisition is finished in the modules and exchanges the data with the
computer(s) through the gateways. It makes the signal wiring and maintenance convenience
by this manner. Moreover data communication via cable transmission and the sensor cable
can connect near to the slave, which can greatly short the cable length.

2.2.1 Gateway Module

The gateway module is the bridge between the various I/O modules and the computer
system. Each module comprises of 4 RS485 communication ports and one RJ45 port. The
interfaces to the various I/O modules are via the dual CANBUS, while the computer system
via the RJ45. The RS485 ports are used for external serial interfacing.

A maximum of 8 main and 8 backup gateways can be connected within a system. The main
and backup gateways are independent of each other as the connection to the CANBUS is
separated. The main gateway will be connected to the CANBUS 1 while backup gateway will
be connected to the CANBUS 2 of the I/O modules. This redundancy connection improves
the reliability of the system.

2.2.2. Stm7-SAFT
The Stm7-SAFT module comprises of 20 binary inputs channels and 20 binary outputs
channels. The first 16 binary inputs channels come with wire-break detection function while
the remaining 4 binary inputs channels are without. For these binary inputs with wire-break
function the input signals must be volt-free normally opened contact (closed to alarm) as the
monitoring & alarm system will provide the power supply to it. A 3kΩ resistor must be
connected across the contact to monitor the wire-break.

2.2.3. Stm7-In32
The Stm7-In32 binary input module is makes up of 32 binary inputs channels. Each input
channel is isolated by optocoupler. The input signal should be passive contact type (dry
contact) in general requirement. The monitoring system will provide the power supply of
signal acquisition.

On the other hand, there are also two input channels for speed measurement (accept pulse
signal only). By using these two input channels, it allows the monitoring of speed discrepancy.

Note: If the input signal is an active contact type (wet contact), it should advice accordingly. A
maximum of 8 Stm7-In32 modules can be connected within a loop.

2.2.4. Stm7-InOut

Page 9 / 27
NSS-MD-2001-EN N3500
Version 1.02 Alarm & Monitoring System
16/11/2017 - XSQ User Manual

The Stm7-InOut module comprises of 13 binary inputs, 2 analogue inputs and 16 binary
outputs channels. The 2 analogue inputs can be configured as either current or voltage.

NOTICE A maximum of 4 x Stm7-InOut modules can be

connected within a loop.

READ Refer to MD-2007-N3500 IOs manual for more

details.

2.2.5. Stm7-I/V1
The Stm7-I/V1 is an analogue input module for either current or voltage and can accept up to
12 inputs. When used as current inputs signal (4~20mA), it is based on two wires system
with the power supply (DC24V) provided from the module itself to power up the transmitter
(active type).

When the module used as voltage input, it can accept either 0~10V, 2~10V, 0~5V or 1~5V.
The connection method and power supply to the transmitter should be discussed before the
design.
_
NOTICE If the current input signals are different (e.g. 4-
wires system or passive type), it should be
advice accordingly.

A maximum of 16 combination analogue modules

(Stm7-I/V1, Stm7-PT100 and Stm7-MV1) can be
connected within a loop.

The Stm7-PT100 module comprises of 12 PT100, thermal resistance, input channels. The
PT100 sensor can be connected either as 2 wires, 3 wires or 4 wires system. In general a 3
wires system connection is used as it can reduce the measurement error caused by the
cables resistance. Each channel can define the sensor range accordingly.

NOTICE In case other types of sensors (e.g. PT10 or

PT1000) are used, it should be advice
accordingly.

A maximum of 16 combination analogue modules

(Stm7-I/V1, Stm7-PT100 and Stm7-MV1) can be
connected within a loop.

The measuring range of the sensors must be

predefined due to the different hardware
analogue module used.

details.

2.2.7. Stm7-MV1
The Stm7-MV1 module comprises of 12 thermocouple input channels and can accept
different thermocouple type. Each channel can define the thermocouple type and range
accordingly.

NOTICE A maximum of 16 combination analogue modules

(Stm7-I/V1, Stm7-PT100 and Stm7-MV1) can be
connected within a loop.

The CANBUS communication status can be access via the NoriVisu 3500 operate page from
the computer. The status window is as shown below (figure 6).

It’s easy for user to check the communication status. In NoriVisu 3500, click the menu by
following step <Check> - < CAN Comm. Status Check > to access the CAN Communicaton
Status window.
