Overview of Manual
This document uses icons to highlight valuable information. Remember these icons and what they
mean, as they will assist you throughout the manual.
The Licensing Procedures document has been designed as such so that you can click on references
in the document to jump to that referenced point without having to scroll through several pages (in
some cases). For example, if you were to see the sentence “Refer to Figure 1 for more
information”, pressing the CTRL key and clicking your mouse on the text “Figure 1” will
automatically take you to the location of Figure 1 within the document.
This document consists of several sections and is structured as follows:
• Introduction – this introductory chapter.
• Licensing – hardware and software key licensing information.
• Software Licensing Wizard – information about the MatrikonOPC Licensing Utility that is
used to license driver software, and the variety of ways in which licenses can be obtained.
• Licensing FAQs – common questions regarding licensing.
• Contacting MatrikonOPC – contact phone and fax numbers, and email addresses, for
MatrikonOPC’s Licensing and Support teams.

Licensing information is also provided online in MatrikonOPC’s Knowledge Base.
Terminology
Table 1 provides a list of definitions for terms used throughout this document.
The following terms are used interchangeably:
• screen and window
• MatrikonOPC License Wizard and License Wizard
Note: No data is lost in the event of license failure, only the ability to
retrieve data is affected.
Hardware Keys
For software that supports hardware key licensing, a USB or HASP hardware key coded to that
particular program can be purchased. This key must be securely fastened to the parallel (or USB)
port of the computer on which the software is installed.
MatrikonOPC parallel port keys cannot be combined in a series (i.e., “daisy-chained”). All licenses
must exist on one physical key, either parallel or USB. However, it does not interfere with
hardware keys from other vendors, nor does it affect other normal parallel port applications, such
as printing.
If the software uses hardware licensing, the installation program installs a device driver for USB or
HASP keys on the target system. It functions for a demonstration period of two hours before
“timing out”. At this point, all device communication will cease.
Software Keys
For products that support feature-specific and computer-specific licensing, a license is issued that is
specific to a given set of features in the application, and to the computer on which it is installed.
The license will not work on another computer, and supports only those features that have been
purchased. Products that are software-licensed only, stop working once the license expires.
If you have not purchased the software yet, select the 30-day option. The software can be
permanently licensed at a later date without needing to re-install.
If you have purchased the software and have your 34-digit activation key and lock selector, select
the second option. The Matrikon License Wizard is launched later in the installation process and
it can also be launched after the install has completed.
To launch the Wizard after installation is complete:
1. Click on the Windows Start button.
2. Select Programs -> MatrikonOPC -> [Server/Product Name] -> License Wizard.
3. The Matrikon License Wizard (Figure 2) appears.
5. Complete the following fields: Activation Key, Lock Code, and Computer Name (for the
system on which the OPC software was installed). All of this information is available in the
file that was generated by the Matrikon License Wizard.
6. Once all the fields are entered, click on the Request License Key button.
7. After a short delay, a license details screen (Figure 7) appears and provides the following
features:
• The Copy button copies the license key code to the clipboard so that it can be pasted
into another file or an email and then transferred to the system with the OPC
software installed on it.
• The Save button saves the license key code to a file named license.mtkl, which can
then be transferred to the system with the OPC software installed on it.
• The Print button allows you to output the license key code to a printer if you want to
make a copy of the code or physically bring it to the system with the OPC software
installed on it.
• The Activate Another License returns you to the main licensing webpage.
8. Return to the system with the OPC software installed on it and launch the Matrikon
License Wizard.
9. The License Wizard Step 2 screen (Figure 8) should appear once again.
10. Using the Browse button, locate the license file that contains the license key code.
11. Once you have located the file, click Next to continue.
12. If the licensing is successful, the Step 3: Review Licensing screen (Figure 9) appears.
6. The listed file must then be emailed to [email protected] to confirm the license
removal. If successful, the activation key is incremented by one license.
Answer: No, the licenses will no longer be detected by newer versions of our software.
When the software is upgraded, you will be prompted to send the
RemoveRequest.MTK file for the software to [email protected]. Provided
that your annual maintenance contract is up-to-date, once the license removal process
is completed you will be provided with an activation key for licensing the software.
5. Click on the Export to CSV button to export the license data to a comma-
separated values (CSV) file.
6. Click on the OK button the close the License Viewer window and return to the
MTK Software Authorization window.
Demo License
Question: Can I re-install my MatrikonOPC product to obtain another 30 days?
Answer: No. Re-installing the product will not allow another 30-day evaluation license. Contact
MatrikonOPC Support or your Account Manager for more information.
Question: My license has expired. Who should I talk to about getting a new one?
Answer: The lock code is only required for licensing via the webpage or via email. It can be
located on the Step 2 screen within the Matrikon License Wizard.
Answer: The activation key and lock selector will have been included in either the FTP link you
were sent to download the software or along with the CD that was shipped to you. In
the event that you are unable to locate the activation key, please contact
[email protected] and include as much information about the purchasing
details as possible so that it can be tracked down.
Answer: The PC name, while not required to obtain a license, is used for tracking where your
licenses are located. It allows us to verify where licenses were issued in the event of
hardware failures or license audits.
Hardware License
Question: Can I install multiple keys on the same parallel port? Will the system recognize
multiple USB keys?
Answer: No. Each parallel hardware key needs to be on its own port. You cannot “daisy-chain”
them together. If you do, only the first key (i.e., the one attached directly to the
computer) will be recognized. Also, only one USB key connected to the system will be
recognized. Refer to Hardware Keys in this document for more information.
