A New Role for Students:

Co-Designers and

Co-Learners

The new role for students

goes beyond the notions of
student voice and student
agency to combine both
internal development and
external connections to the
world.
“…a focus on the 6Cs
immunizes and protects
against social and
emotional difficulties thus
building positive mental
health and resilience…

Learning Experiences that foster the 6C’s
1. Involve higher order cognitive processes to reach a deep
understanding of content and issue
2. Often include immersion in addressing areas or issues that are
cross disciplinary
3. Integrate academic and personal capacities
4. Are active, authentic, challenging and student centered 5. Are
often designed to impact the world, locally or more widely
6. Take place in a range of settings and increasingly use the digital
and connectivity
Fullan, Quinn & McEachen, Deep Learning: Engage the World Change the World, Corwin 2018

Assessing Current Practice

1. Identify examples of ways you

currently in the four elements in
your classrooms/school and
record in column one

2. Identify two ways you could focus

more deeply on each element in the
future. Record in column two.

The Deep Learning Hub

Connects people to:

▪ Educators across the globe

▪ Exemplars of deep learning
created by teachers
▪ Collaboration space
▪ Tools and resources
▪ Global experts
Logistics - What do schools do?
▪ Identify a school lead as contact
▪ Assess current capacity using rubrics
▪ Support teachers to participate in collaborative inquiry
cycles using the progressions and tools at least twice
annually
▪ Support teachers to submit ratings on one progression
annually
▪ Select and submit one exemplar to the cluster annually.
Logistics - What do Clusters do? ▪ Develop a
plan to select and support schools and School Leads
▪ Plan professional learning and resources to support
implementation
▪ Facilitate a moderation of exemplars of Deep Learning from
schools and submit up to 10 to the global team
▪ Participate in the monthly Cluster Team Calls
▪ Attend the NPDL Global Events and Regional events as
possible
