Data Interpretation
Class X
Introduction:
Data Interpretation is a method that is used to derive useful information from a collected set of data. This
collected data could be in the form of a pie chart, graph, table etc. The data has to be analyzed and
utilized by the student to write a paragraph providing the factual information. In simple words, you will be
presented with a data in the form of a pie chart/bar graph/line graph/table etc. Based on the given data
you will have to write a paragraph.
A paragraph can be written on any topic whatsoever. Data interpretation on the other hand compiles a
given set of data and frames it into a paragraph. A paragraph usually consists of several sentences that
deal with a single subject. Although a paragraph has some limitation on length, it may vary according to
the subject discussed. However, data interpretations have to give the details of the specified data in a
precise, simple and crisp way.
Points to Remember:
1. Data interpretation does not follow any format and is written in a paragraph; however a title to the
paragraph is always expected.
2. It should always be written in a precise manner, by using short and crisp sentences.
3. Comparison and contrast shall be made and shown using words and figures.
4. The analyzers shall not present their opinions, only interpret the data given.
SOLVED EXAMPLES:
Q1. The data given below shows the changes in education for women that occurred between the
years 1995 and 2010 in Bilaspur. Interpret the given data and write a paragraph in about 100-150
words.
The above survey reveals that provisions for the education of the girl-child in Bilaspur have changed
only a little over the period of 15 years. In the year 1995, there were only 10 schools for girls, which
rose to 15 by 2010. However, the number of students studying in these schools went up from 10,000
in 1995 to 16,000 in 2010. In the same period of time, the number of women colleges increased from
3 to 4 while the number of students increased from 6,000 to 10,000. The literacy rate has improved
by 25% from being just 30% in 1995 to 55% in 2010. As per the data, there are only three distance
education centres in Bilaspur.
Q2. Study the chart given below, which is the result of the survey conducted in the public schools and
government schools of Haryana. This depicts the types of activities the teenagers (Age 13- 19 years are
involved during their leisure time). Complete the summary in about 100-150 words.
In a survey conducted recently on some students of two leading schools- one government and the other
a public school revealed that technology and social media has the power to engulf those who come in its
contact. The students of public schools who have easy access to net surfing and cell phones spend 50%
of their leisure time in net surfing and around 16-18% of the time goes to cell phones, in contrast to this
only 9% of the government school students’ time is devoted to net surfing and cell phones. On the other
hand, the government school students are way ahead in spending their time by watching television or
playing with friends, interestingly, 34% of the government students’ time is taken by television and 23%
of their time is invested in their friends. The public school students comparatively spend 3% lesser time
in front of the television and the friends get a 19% of their leisure time.
Q3. The following data in the form of histogram shows that death due to violence has increased
considerably during recent years. Write its interpretation in 100-150 words on how educated
youth can play a major role in establishing peace in society.
The youth of the nation can play a major role in controlling this crime graph. They can contribute towards
establishing peace in many ways. They can awaken the people towards the necessity of peace. They
can help the police in catching the criminals. They can bring the criminals in the main stream by
educating them and they can do much more.
Improved Piece:
In a survey conducted, it has been found that number of deaths due to violence has increased
enormously since the nineties. Violence gifted a ham-handed figure of death rate which was 2.5
in 1990 and thereafter the histogram shows a regular increase until the year 2010. In between
1990 to 2000 a steady jump of 1.5 can be seen after every 5 years. However, the data shows that
0.5 got added in the year 2005, to the steady jump of 1.5, making the death rate stand at 6.5, it
again came down by 0.5 in the year 2010. But if we see the figures of 1990 and 2010, the death
rate has shot up from 2.5 to 7.5, making it a matter of grave concern.
