movement of flow of electrons through a conductor.

Volt
the electricity that moves through a wire when a switch
is turned on.

Watt
the amount of electricity consumed per second.
What is an
Electrical System?
Electrical System
Also called "circuits or networks"

A network of conductors and machinery intended to

securely transport, distribute, and convert electrical
power from the source of
delivery or generation to the
various loads within the building that consume the
electrical energy.

Electrical systems and components run in the

background, keeping your plant energized, but without
maintenance and attention, things can go wrong.
How does an
Electrical System
work?
A home’s electrical system includes
incoming power lines, an electric meter, a
service panel, subpanels, household
wiring, electrical boxes, receptacles
(outlets), switches, and, of course, the
appliances, lights, and equipment that
put the power to work.

Electricity travels from the service panel

to home appliances through the hot
conductor, and returns the current to the
main service panel through the neutral
conductor. A third or “grounding” wire is
also connected to all outlets and metal
boxes in your home.
Small Buildings Electrical System
Small commercial or residential buildings have a very
simple power distribution system. The utility will own the
transformer, which will sit on a pad outside the building or
will be attached to a utility
pole. The transformer reduces
the voltage and then passes the electricity to a meter, which
is owned by the utility and keeps a record of power
consumption.
Large Buildings Electrical System
Large buildings have a much higher electrical load than
small buildings; therefore, the electrical equipment must be
larger and more robust. Large building owners will also
purchase electricity at high
voltages because it comes at a
cheaper rate. In this case, the owner will provide and
maintain their own step-down transformer, which lowers
the voltage to a more usable level. This transformer can be
mounted on a pad outside the building or in a transformer
room inside the building.

Reasons You Need to Upgrade

Your Electrical System (Home)

1. To Bring Your Home Electrical System up

to Code
Building codes may vary from one year to the next, and new
safety standards may have been

implemented since your
home electrical system was installed or updated last.

Performing an electrical upgrade can help bring your

home’s wiring back in line with current building codes.

2. To Prevent Fire Hazards

When electric system maintenance falls behind, there is a risk that
frayed wires and other issues can create fire hazards.

So, one reason to upgrade your home electrical system is to

minimize fire risks.

Qualified electrician services can inspect your electrical system

to identify common electrical issues that could lead to a fire and fix
them. This can easily be part of a larger home renovation project.

3. To Meet the Power Needs of New Appliances

In fact, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information

Administration (EIA), “In 2017, the average annual electricity consumption
for a U.S. residential utility customer was 10,399 kilowatt hours (kWh), an
average 867 kWh per month.”

Upgrading electrical systems to be able to take the load can be

important—especially in an older home that wasn’t designed with
modern power demands in mind.
4. To Add New Outlets for Added Convenience

Upgrading electrical systems to add new outlets or circuits can help

increase convenience for your home
by letting you rearrange your
appliances more freely. This can save a lot of time and headaches
later when you’re trying to move furniture or change a bedroom
into a “man cave” or other entertainment room.

5. To Take Advantage of a Home Remodel/Renovation

Electrical upgrades are a common part of a home renovation or remodel.

This is because it’s often easier to carry out electrical system upgrades
when walls and other parts of the building are already being taken apart

for other updates or as part of a new layout.

If the electrician services you hire aren’t having to take the building apart
themselves just to access wiring, it can save you some time and labor on
upgrading electrical systems in your home.

Updating Your Electrical

System – How, When and Why

The first step is to upgrade your panel by bringing more power

from the utility to your home.

The second step includes adding extra circuits that can distribute
the power to your rooms and appliances.

Updating the system may also include adding new electrical

outlets and replacing the used cable, old cable wires and
receptacles.

How to Update your Electrical System?

Signs that you Need to Update your Electrical Panel

1. Breakers tripping frequently

2. Fuses blowing repeatedly
3. Constant flickering or dimming of lights
4. A tingling sensation whenever you touch any electric appliance
5. Warm, discolored or sparking outlets

6. A persistent burning smell from a room or appliance

7. Two-prong ungrounded outlets throughout the house
8. No Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets in various rooms and
areas exposed to moisture e.g. kitchens and baths.

When to Update your Electrical System?

An old electrical system creates a fire
hazard, putting you and your family at
risk.

The risk of electrocution increases.

The lifespan of your electrical appliances will be cut down significantly

as the faulty wiring won’t be able to manage the power in a safe
manner, as it once did, and it may short your appliances.

Why electrical systems need to upgrade?

BENEFITS OF UPGRADING THE

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
1. SAFER HOME ENVIRONMENT

– To prevent electrical fire

hazards.
2. UPDATES MATCHING LEGAL
CODES

– To ensure that you are legally

right.
3. POWER NEEDS OF NEW
APPLIANCES

– To use heavy electrical

appliances without any
danger.
4. INCREASED CONVENIENCE

– To let the electrical appliances

function with more efficiency.
5. CAPITALIZE ON A HOME
REMODEL

–To increase your home’s value.

6. SAVE MONEY
– An updated system can run
more efficiently and help you
save money on electrical bills.
