Quarter 1: Module 2
Factoring Polynomials
You can say that you have understood the lesson in this module if you can
already:
1. factor the perfect square trinomials,
2. factor the sum and difference of two cubes,
3. factor general trinomials of the form x2 + bx + c, and
4. factor general trinomials of the form ax2 + bx + c.

10. Choose the expression for the area of smaller square in the
frame:
A. (9x – 3)2 B. (9x + 3)2 C. (9x – 6)2 D. (9x – 9)2
14. What expressions represent the length and width of a rectangular school
ground when its area is y2 + 15y + 54 square meters?
A. (y + 54) and (y + 21) C. (y + 18) and (y + 3)
B. (y + 27) and (y + 2) D. (y + 9) and (y + 6)

The boxes are stacked for delivery of goods to groceries within Marikina City.
Observe the boxes as shown in the Figures A and B. Then, answer the
questions that follow:
Figure A Figure B
Steps in Factoring:
Step 1: Examine if the two terms have common factor (GCF), if so, factor out
the GCF. Do not forget to include the GCF as part of your final answer.
Step 2: Get the cube root of the 1st term, then the 2nd term to get the BINOMIAL
FACTOR.
Step 3: Square the 1st term of the binomial factor to get the 1 st term of the
TRINOMIAL FACTOR.
Step 4: Multiply the terms of the binomial factor to get the middle term of the
trinomial factor. NOTE: signs are opposite.
Step 5: Lastly, square the last term of the binomial factor to get the last term
of the trinomial factor.
Step 1: no GCF
Step 2: 3

Step 4: (x + 6) -6x
Step 5: (+6)2 36
Factored form: (x + 6)(x2 – 6x + 36)
Step 3: x x2

What I Can Do
A. Use the given variables to represent the volume of these boxes stacked
up for delivery of goods. Write the factors of its volume.
B. Choose some boxes in your house. Stack them up and represent their
volume and factors using algebraic expressions. Then find the volume
of the boxes in square centimeters.
C. Organize some things in one of the boxes, and list down all the things
that will fit in when properly placed.

x2 + 2xy + y2 (x + y)2
x2 - 2xy + y2 (x - y)2
a2 + 10a + 25
√𝑎2 = a + √25 = 5
Factored form: (a + 5)2
b2 – 16a + 16
√𝑏2 = b – √16 = 4
Factored form: (b – 4)2
The given does not appear as perfect square trinomial. By inspection, each
term has greatest common factor (GCF) so, applying factoring we have,
√4𝑐 2 = 2c + √9 = 3
Factored form: 5c2 (2c + 3)2

“Paper Folding”: The rectangular papers are folded and labeled. Write their
areas and dimensions (length and width) using algebraic expressions.

1) Area: __________
2) Area: __________
Area:: x2+3x+2 Dimensions:
Dimensions:
Dimensions: (x+1) ____________
____________
____________
(x+2) ____________
19
The activity about rectangles with their areas and dimensions gave an
illustration about general trinomials and their factors.
General Trinomials
1) factor the leading term of the trinomial and write these as the leading
term of each factor;
2) list down all the factors of the last term;
3) identify which factor pair sums up to the middle term;
4) write the factor pairs as the last term of the binomial factors.
1) find the product of the leading term and the last term
2) determine the factor pair of the product whose sum is the middle
term
3) rewrite the trinomial as a four-term expression by replacing the
middle term by the factor pair
4) group terms with common factors, and factor the groups using GCF
5) factor out the common binomial and write the remaining factor as
sum or difference of binomial
REMINDER: Examine the terms first if they have greatest common factor (GCF) and
factor out the GCF before performing any other methods of factoring. Include the GCF
in your final answer.
