What is It
The sum and difference of two cubes can be factored into a product of
a binomial times a trinomial. Let us study the patterns below.

Steps in Factoring:

Step 1: Examine if the two terms have common factor (GCF), if so, factor out
the GCF. Do not forget to include the GCF as part of your final answer.
Step 2: Get the cube root of the 1st term, then the 2nd term to get the BINOMIAL
FACTOR.
Step 3: Square the 1st term of the binomial factor to get the 1 st term of the
TRINOMIAL FACTOR.
Step 4: Multiply the terms of the binomial factor to get the middle term of the
trinomial factor. NOTE: signs are opposite.
Step 5: Lastly, square the last term of the binomial factor to get the last term
of the trinomial factor.

These patterns are used in factoring perfect square trinomials:

Perfect Square Trinomials Factors

x2 + 2xy + y2 (x + y)2

x2 - 2xy + y2 (x - y)2

To factor perfect square trinomials:

a. get the square root of the first and last terms
b. put the square root of first and last terms in parentheses with
plus (or minus) sign between them and raise to the second
power

Example 1: Factor a2 + 10a + 25

a2 + 10a + 25

√𝑎2 = a + √25 = 5
Factored form: (a + 5)2

Example 2: Factor b2 – 16b + 16

b2 – 16a + 16

√𝑏2 = b – √16 = 4
Factored form: (b – 4)2

Example 3: Factor 20c4 + 60c3 + 45c2

The given does not appear as perfect square trinomial. By inspection, each
term has greatest common factor (GCF) so, applying factoring we have,

20c4 + 60c3 + 45c2 = 5c2 (4c2 + 12c + 9)

GCF Perfect square trinomial

What is It

The activity about rectangles with their areas and dimensions gave an
illustration about general trinomials and their factors.
General Trinomials

A. Trinomials of the form x2 + bx + c, where b and c are real numbers and

the numerical coefficient of x2 is 1
B. Trinomials of the form ax2 + bx + c, where a, b and c are real numbers
and a is not 1.

Steps in factoring trinomials in the form x2 + bx + c:

1) factor the leading term of the trinomial and write these as the leading
term of each factor;
2) list down all the factors of the last term;
3) identify which factor pair sums up to the middle term;
4) write the factor pairs as the last term of the binomial factors.

Steps in Factoring trinomials in the form ax2 + bx + c:

1) find the product of the leading term and the last term
2) determine the factor pair of the product whose sum is the middle
term
3) rewrite the trinomial as a four-term expression by replacing the
middle term by the factor pair
4) group terms with common factors, and factor the groups using GCF
5) factor out the common binomial and write the remaining factor as
sum or difference of binomial

REMINDER: Examine the terms first if they have greatest common factor (GCF) and
factor out the GCF before performing any other methods of factoring. Include the GCF
in your final answer.

Example 1: Factor x2 – 11x + 28 (trinomial in the form x2 + bx + c)

Step 1: x2 (x)(x) (x __ __ )(x __ __ )

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE

Step 4: (x __ __ )(x __ __ ) (x - 7) (x - 4 )

Factored form: (x - 7) (x - 4 )

Example 2: Factor 3x2 + 5x + 2 (trinomial in the form ax2 + bx + c)

Step 1: 3x2 + 5x + 2

(3x2) * (2) = 6x2

Step 2: The factor pair of 6x2 whose sum is 5x (3x)(2x)

Step 3: 3x2 + 3x + 2x + 2

Step 4: (3x2 + 3x) + (2x + 2) 3x (x + 1) + 2 (x + 1)

Step 5: (3x + 2) (x + 1)
Factored form: (3x + 2) (x + 1)

____ 3. x2 + 4x – 32 (x – 4)(x – 2)
____ 4. x2 – 6x + 8 (x + 4)(x + 3)
____ 5. x2 – 4x + 3 (x + 1)(x – 8)
____ 6. x2 – 8x - 20 (x – 1)(x – 3)

____ 10. x2 + 10x + 24 (x + 2)(x – 10)
(x – 4) (x + 6)

B. Factor the following completely:

1. 7x2 – 11x + 4 4) 2n2 – 3n – 14

2. 2y2 + 13y + 15 5) 10x2 + 13x – 30
