Grade 1 Math Lesson: Basic Shapes

This detailed lesson plan outlines a 50-minute mathematics lesson for grade 1 students to identify, name, and describe the four basic shapes: square, rectangle, triangle, and circle. The lesson begins with a warm-up activity identifying shapes in a song. Students are then shown examples of the basic shapes and work in groups to practice identifying their names, number of sides, and number of corners. The lesson concludes with an assessment and enrichment activity in their workbooks. The overall goal is for students to understand the key attributes that define the 2-dimensional basic shapes.

cosume)
Preparation [Link] each item orally.
5 minutes Five is one-half of ______.
One-fourth of the number of boys is 10. How many boys are there?

[Link] a song about shapes.

Tune: Watermelon

Circle 4x
Triangle 2x

Have pupils perform the shapes which corresponds the line of the song using their body
language.
Ask: What are the shapes mentioned in the song?
How does each shape look like? (closed figures)
Can you describe each shape? (Yes)

Presentation 1. Distribute bigger shape figures to the pupils.

20 minutes Ask: How many figures were given to you? (4)
Are you familiar with these figures? (Yes)
Are these figures closed or free bound? (closed)
What are closed figures called? (shapes)

2. Show a parade of basic shapes in front of the class.

Ask: How many shapes were there in the show? (4)
Can you name the 4 shapes? (Yes, circle, rectangle, triangle and square)
Can you describe each shape? (Yes, let pupils describe each shape according
to common attributes e.g. size and corners
a. Circle has 0 sides and 0 corners.
b. Rectangle has 4 corners and 2 opposite sides are equal.
c. Triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners.
d. Square has 4 equal sides and 4 corners.

3. Ask: Are these shapes flat or bold? (flat)
