Transistor Load Line Analysis

The document discusses transistor load line analysis, which involves plotting the transistor's output characteristic curve and drawing a load line to determine the collector current (IC) for a given collector-emitter voltage (VCE). Key points of the load line analysis include the cutoff point where IC is very small, the saturation point where VCE is very small and IC is at a maximum, and the operating or quiescent point where the load line intersects the output characteristic curve. Sample problems demonstrate using the load line analysis to calculate IC and VCE at different points and illustrate the load line.

WEEK 7: TRANSISTOR LOAD LINE ANALYSIS

Ø The load line analysis of transistor

means for the given value of collector-
emitter voltage we find the value of
collector current.

Ø This can be done by plotting the output

characteristic and then determine the
collector current IC with respect to
collector-emitter voltage VCE.

Ø The load line analysis can easily be

obtained by determining the output
characteristics of the load line analysis
methods.
WEEK 7: TRANSISTOR LOAD LINE ANALYSIS
DC LOAD LINE ANALYSIS
By applying Kirchhoff’s voltage law to the collector circuit,
we get,
VCC - ICRC - VCE = 0
VCE = VCC - ICRC

The Cut-off point

§ The cutoff point is the point at which the load line
intersect the cutoff region of the collector curve (point A).

§ Because the collector current is very small, the cutoff

point almost touches the lower end of the load line.The
cutoff point is the maximum possible collector emitter
voltage (VCE) .
VCE = VCC - (0) RC
VCE = VCC

The Saturation Point
§ The saturation point is the point where the load line
intersects the saturation region of the collector curves
(point B)

§ Because the collector-emitter voltage is at saturation is

very small, the saturation point is almost touching the
upper end of the load line.

§ The collector current IC becomes maximum when the

collector-emitter voltage VCE = 0.

VCE = VCC + ICRC

0 = VCC + ICRC
IC = VCC / RC

The Operating Point
§ The line drawn over the output characteristic curve,
makes contact at a point called as Operating point.

§ This operating point is also called as quiescent

point or simply Q-point. There can be many such
intersecting points.
