Robots are used for tasks that are dull, require precision, or are dangerous for humans. They have sensors to sense their environment, computation to process information, and actuators to move. The term "robot" comes from the Czech word "robota" meaning forced labor or servitude. Lego Mindstorms kits allow people to build and program small robots. The EV3 is the third generation kit, released in 2013, with more sensors and an advanced approach to learning robotics through interactive programming.

Why do we need robots?

3ds

1. Dull - industrial settings

- For the mass production of products

2.
Precision and Accuracy
- The machine allows surgeons to perform procedures that require perfect accuracy
- Da Vinci Robot

3. Dirty and Dangerous

- Robot is sent off the to check n dangerous and life threatening situations for humans

4. Entertainment

Main components of a robot

1. Sensors - SENSE
2. Computation - THINK
3. Actuators - ACT
- Parts that allow movements

Where did the term robot come from?

- ‘Robota’ translates as ‘forced work’ ‘slave’ or ‘servitude’

Introduction to EV3

Lego
- Derived from the first two words of danish word ‘Leg Godt’ meaning ‘play well’
- Allows us to have robotics while playing
- Allows individuals without much knowledge in advanced robotics to program, design,
and build small-scale robots

1st generation mindstorm (RCX)

- 1986 the first-computer controlled lego products released
- It can be assembled in different ways
2nd generation (NXT)
- Released in 1988
- Collaboration between lego and MIT
3rd generation (EV3)
- Includes a more diverse mix of sensors
- Advanced approach for learning robotics
- Interactive animation
EV - evolution
- Officially announced on Jan. 4, 2013
- Home Edition was released on Sept. 1, 2013
- Education edition was released on Aug. 1, 2013

ICT POINTERS
1. What is a robot?
2. Introduction to EV3
3. Parts of EV3

What is a robot?
A robot
- Is a machine used to perform jobs automatically and is controlled by a computer
- A machine capable of carrying out complex actions
- ‘Robota’ translated to ‘forced work’, ‘slave’, or ‘servitude’

Main points to define a robot

Artificial
Was it manufactures and does not occur naturally

Controlled by a computer
Whether full sized or micro

Sense
Can it sense its surroundings

Perform actions
Can carry out task and move

Why do we have robots?

1. Dull - for mass production of products
2. Precision - For situations that require perfect accuracy
3. Dirty and Dangerous - for situations where it would be too dangerous for a human\
4. Entertainment - for enjoyment

Main components of a Robot

Sensors - SENSE = for detecting surroundings
Computation - THINK = for processing information
Actuators - ACT = for movement
Sensors -> Computation -> Actuators
