Course Introduction
This is course designed for Executive Programme in Business Management for the officers of Armed
Forces for understanding design, operations and coordination functions in manufacturing and service
organizations. Operations Management deals with creation of value to the customer directly or supports
the value creation from the perspectives of corporate strategy. It encapsulates designing, developing,
planning, managing and changing business processes that transform the inputs to the desired output. The
course has a focus:
Ø To understand long term concepts related to Conversion Process, Design of product and services,
Capacity, Location and Layout decisions, Process/Technology selection.
Ø To gain knowledge in the field of operational excellence and leading to supply chain function.
Course Objectives
Ø To emphasize and bring out the strategic role of Operations Management (OM)
Ø To understand the issues involved in Strategic Choices, Processes, Quality and Capacity, Location &
Layout, Project Management, Information Technology, Inventory Management and Resource
Planning.
Ø To help the students understand Designing Value Chains, understand the broad concept of operational
excellence leading to supply chain.

Pedagogy
The course will be based on lectures, cases, discussion, presentation and exercises. A problem-solving
analytical approach will be developed among the students throughout the course. Students would be
encouraged to work individually as well as in teams.
Students to come prepared to the class by going through each case (whenever assigned) and whole chapter,
as per the session plan, for discussion and participation in the class.
This will build the basic foundation for taking next course of supply chain management as well as
specialized courses in operations management areas in due course like advanced supply chain
management.

Group Project
The group project will be one of the most important learning tools of the course. Each group will comprise
of 4/6 students. This is a business situation based project, which requires analysis from operations
perspective and tangible recommendations. The groups are required to identify a company/sector as well
as the project. The deliverables of the project will be discussed in class.
Articles /research papers from IIFT library e-databases like Emerald Insight and Science Direct
can be referred to for advanced knowledge of concepts, frameworks and applications.
