Contrast

The document discusses contrast in design. It states that the human eye can comprehend a diversity of visual phenomena simultaneously, but too much diversity causes confusion. Contrast is defined as the optimum diversity in a visual composition that retains attention without appearing chaotic. Contrast is created through differences between design elements and accentuates these differences. The level of contrast that constitutes optimum varies by culture and observer habits. In architecture, contrast can be through mass, space, between mass and space, and surface, such as through materials, textures, colors, patterns and fenestration.

CONTRAST:

•Human eye built to comprehend a great diversity of visual phenomenon

simultaneously.

•Lack of it causes visual tiredness and lack of concentration.

•Feelings of monotony and depression will arise.

•On the other hand too much diversity also causes confusion and chaos
in visual perception.
•Hence Contrast can be defined as that optimum diversity in a visual
composition that retains attention and interest without appearing
confusing and chaotic.

•Contrast in design is an accentuation of the differences between

elements in a design.

•Hence contrast is the means of creating interest.

•The quantum of diversity that may form optimum varies according to

culture and habits of the observer.
•In Architecture, Contrast can be of many kinds.
1)Contrast in Mass
•Between vertical and horizontal mass.

Contrast in direction of masses

•Projecting and receding mass.

•Difference in form of masses.
