Thank you for purchasing the Model AKV-202 from Tanaka Scientific Limited.
This instruction manual provides necessary information for using the AKV-202. Read
this manual thoroughly before use and ensure that you have understood its contents.

The reader is assumed to have sufficient knowledge of ASTM/ISO procedures and
standards as well as knowledge of the correct handling procedures for hazardous
materials.

WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS FOR SAFE USE

Failure to follow all of the warnings and cautions listed below may result in
damage to the tester and/or serious personal injury.
Tanaka Scientific Limited will not assume any responsibility for faults or
accidents arising from failure to adhere to these instructions.

Installation Environment

! Warning: The tester must be installed in a well-ventilated


environment.
As samples release inflammable and/or toxic gases,
inadequate ventilation may result in poisoning.

! Warning: Install the tester on a strong level table.


Keep inflammable substances away from the tester.
Ensure that a fire extinguisher is kept near the
tester.
If the table is unstable, the tester may fall down
causing a fire.

Electric Connection
! Warning: Observe the following instructions when handling
power cables and electric connections:
· Do not connect or disconnect any cables or
electrical connections when the mains power is
ON.
· Do not handle any cables or electrical
connections with wet hands.
· Never use the cord to pull a plug from an
outlet.
· Do not place heavy items on cords or cable.
· Do not use force to bend any cords or cables.
· Ensure that all electric connections (plugs,
sockets, connectors, etc.) are free of dust.
· Keep all cables and electrical connections

free of water and other liquids.

Failure to adhere to the above precautions may


result in electric shock, damage to the tester, cords
and/or cables, and/or fire due to overheating.

! Warning: Ensure that supply voltage meets the


specifications of the product.
Do not turn the power on until all electric
connections are secured.
Incorrect power supply specifications or loose
electric connections may damage the tester and
result in electric shock and/or other electrical
accidents.

! Warning: Ensure all ground wires are securely grounded.


Loose or disconnected ground wires may result in
electric shock.
Never connect the ground wires to gas pipes.
Doing so may result in a fire or explosion.
Ground wires may be connected to one of the
following:
· Ground terminal of a power outlet
· Copper bar buried 65cm or more underground

Bath Liquid

! Caution: Do not fill Liquid parrafin, Glycerin, Ethyleneglycol


to the bath. Bath temperature may not maintain
and light guide will have a damege.

Handling Precautions

! Caution: Be sure to confirm test configuration prior to every


test.
Testing using incorrect parameters may cause a
uncorrect result.

Operational Precautions

! Warning: Never touch the motor and viscometer top plate


section with bare hands when bath temperature is
set at 50oC or higher. Operator may have burns.

! Warning: The tester is not to be operated unattended.


The tester emits an audible alarm in this case if
flammable cleaning/drying liquid leaks. For safety
reasons, an operator should always be in the same
room when the tester is running.

! Warning: If the tester makes any abnormal noises or exhibits


any abnormal behavior, stop operation
immediately, turn the power off at the mains, and
contact Tanaka Scientific Limited or an authorized
distributor.

Consumables, Accessories and Replacement Parts

! Caution: Use only Tanaka Scientific Limited genuine


consumables, parts and accessories or such parts
as recommended by Tanaka Scientific Limited.

Repairs, Alterations and Maintenance

! Warning: Do not make any modifications or alterations to the


tester without the approval of Tanaka Scientific
Limited.

event that the tester exhibits any abnormal

<Main Body>

1. Control Part: Operation panel are located in the front and CPU and circuit boards
are located inside.
2. MAIN Switch: Used for switching source power to the Tester.
3. Panel Switch: Consists of START/STEP, RESET, ENTER switches as well as
switches for changing test parameters. See detail of panel switch.
4 . Display: VFD module which shows test condition, test status and test result.
5. Heater Output Indicator: Lights when heater is ON.
6. Printer: Prints out test results as well as test parameters.
7. Main Chassis: Vacuum pump, solenoid valve, and piping inside.
8. Liquid Bath: Contains appropriate type liquid bath medium.
9. Viscometer: Modified Lanz-Zeirfuchs viscometers with two bulbs. Test can be
Done by pouring sample from lura (L tube). Refer “Detail of
Viscometer” below.
10. Solvent Dispenser: Caps the lura of viscometer tubes and dispenses solvents.
11. Optical Projector/Receiver Panel:
Inlet of optical fiber for meniscus detector.

13. Solvent Tank: Contain up to two(2) different types of cleaning/drying solvent.

14. Evaporate Trap: Catches oil mist from exhaust.
15. Waste Tank: Contains used test specimen as well as cleaning/drying solvent.
16. Waste Drain: By opting this drain valve and the waste tank valve, waste exits.
17. Bath Drain: By opening this drain valve, bath liquid exits.
18. Bath Overflow: Overflow exits through this nipple.
19. Solvent Inlet: Cleaning/drying solvent is fed through this inlet.
20. Adjustable leg: Adjust leg height so that the unit stands vertically.
21. Coolant Inlet: By feeding cooling medium such as chilled water, bath temperature
can be Lowered. Cooling medium feeding is require when setting of
bath temperature is 30oC or lower.
22. Temperature Sensor: Measures bath medium temperature, and display on the screen.
23. Stirring Motor: Stirs the bath liquid to attain uniform temperature in the bath.
24. Bath Overheat Cutoff Device: Cuts off bath overheat.

<Detail of Viscometers>
Type: Modified Lanz-Zeiffuchs viscometer with two(2) bulbs. Reversed flow type.
Features: Highly accurate measurement is possible for both opaque and clear
samples. Error due to thermal expansion of specimen is automatically
compensated.
Structure: (Refer to Fig. 2.)
- L-tube: The top conical shaped portion works as specimen inlet, and the
lower portion works as specimen reservoir.
- K-tube: This is an overflow tube. Pour in the specimen to the L tube lentil
the overflow starts flowing into the K tube.
- N-tube: Upper vent tube. Also, after a test, specimen exits through this
tube.
- Capillary: Specimen goes through the capillary to determine the Kinematic
Viscosity. The inside diameter of the capillary is determined by the
Kinematic Viscosity range.
- Timing Bulbs: The specimen flows through the lower "C" bulb and then
upper "J" bulb. Kinematic Viscosity is calculated from the time needed to
flow through these two(2) bulbs."

2 Installation

2.1 Installation Site

! Warning: The tester must be installed in a well-ventilated


environment.
As samples release inflammable and/or toxic gases,
inadequate ventilation may result in poisoning.

! Warning: Install the tester on a strong level table.


Keep inflammable substances away from the tester.
Ensure that a fire extinguisher is kept near the
tester.
If the table is unstable, the tester may fall down
causing a fire.

Place the Tester on a level and steady table. When installing on an optional
dedicated table for AKV-202, adjust the level adjusting screws to hold the Tester in
level.
Avoid locations that are
- hot and humid
- poorly ventilated
- exposed to direct sunlight
- dusty
- subject to frequent temperature fluctuation

2.2 Installation

! Caution: REMOVE THE AIR PUMP BASE FIXING SCREWS


BEFORE USE.
This screw protects the insulation rubber bushings
from damage during transportation.
Satisfactory test result might not be obtained, if
this screw was not removed. This is because of the
vibration from the air pumps.

Procedure for removing the air pump base fixing screws is as follows.
1. Remove the Rear Cover fixing screws (8 screws).
2. Remove the Rear Cover.
3. Remove the Air Pump Base fixing screws (2 screws). See Fig. 4.
4. Set the Rear Cover and fix screws.

2.3 Electric Connection

! Warning: Install the tester on a strong level table.

tester.
If the table is unstable, the tester may fall down
causing a fire.

! Warning: Ensure that supply voltage meets the


specifications of the product.
Do not turn the power on until all electric
connections are secured.
Incorrect power supply specifications or loose
electric connections may damage the tester and
result in electric shock and/or other electrical
accidents.

! Warning: Ensure all ground wires are securely grounded.


Loose or disconnected ground wires may result in
electric shock.
Never connect the ground wires to gas pipes.

Ground wires may be connected to one of the
following:
· Ground terminal of a power outlet
· Copper bar buried 65cm or more underground

Plug the power cord into the back of the control part and insert the power plug AC outlet.
The power consumption of model AKV-202 is 2.0 kW (max). When sharing a single
outlet with other electric appliances, take care to ensure that the total power
consumption does not exceed the capacity of the outlet.
The AC plug of standard accessories has ground terminal. Replace AC plug if the style
of the plug is not fit to your country.

2.4 Filling bath liquid

! Caution: Do not fill Liquid parrafin, Glycerin, Ethyleneglycol


to the bath. Bath temperature may not maintain
and light guide will have a damege.

Prepare approx 17 litters of appropriate*1 bath liquid for desired temperature range. The
bath capacity is approximately 17 liters.

*1: For operating temperature equal to or lower than 60 oC, use ion exchanged water or
distilled water. For higher than 60 oC, use silicone oil for extended life of optical fiber.
Silicone oil manufactured by Shin-Etsu Silicone (cat#KF-96-20CS) has been found
satisfactory for AKV-202.
Specification of Sin-Etsu Silicones cat#KF-96-20CS is as follows.

Procedure for filling bath liquid is as follows.


1) Close drain valve located right side of the bath.
2) Attach provided hose to bath overflow nipple located in the left side of the bath,
and then connect it to overflow tank.
3) Remove rubber cap from bath inlet located in the right of bath lid.
4) Place a funnel to the inlet, and then pour bath liquid.
5) Stop pouring when bath liquid is flowed off from overflow nipple.

2.5 Preparation of Cleaning Solvents

! Caution: Do not use Ketone, such as Acetone, or Ether, since these


chemicals damage the Tester.

Remove the lid for cleaning agent tank, and fill the tank with cleaning agent. As
needed, 2 different agents (namely “Solvent-1” and “Solvent-2”) may be used*2, for
which 2 tanks are provided. When using single cleaning agent, the Tester needs to be
set up so that the tank not in use is disabled.*3 The capacity of each tank is approx. 2
litters.

*2: For “Solvent-1”, choose a chemical with good cleaning capability like toluene, while
for “Solvent-2” choose a highly volatile drying agent like ethanol. DO NOT USE A
CHEMICAL WITH ITS BOILING POINT LOWER THAN THE BATH TEMPERATURE.
*3: To disable one of the tanks, refer to AKV-202 Maintenance Manual”.

2.6 Exhaust Connecting


Connect one end of the exhaust hose to exhaust trap and another end to either outside
or fume hood.

3 Routine Daily Inspection

Follow the inspection procedure given in Table 1 below.

4 Prior to Testing

4.1 Setting Viscometers


! Warning: Since viscometer is glass, please handle it with
care when attach it to the holder. A viscometer can
be broken when mishandle it.

Attach viscometers to the holder by following procedure.


1. Prepare Viscometers and Holders.
2. Insert the viscometer to the top plate of the holder. (Fig. 5)
3. Set the underpart of timing bulb of the tube to the viscometer holder cramp. (Fig. 6)
4. Attach L-tube retainer to the L-tube and press it into the top plate of the viscometer
holder. (Fig. 7)
5. Confirm that the viscometer can be moved to up and down.
6. Confirm that the viscometer is attached to the holder vertically.

Attach viscometer holder with viscometer to the light guide holder by following
procedure.
1. Pull out suction meniscus detector from the bath. (Fig. 8)
2. Bring viscometer holder handle toward you, then Insert viscometer holder with
viscometer to the bath. (Fig. 9)

3. Attach suction meniscus detector to upper part of the capillary while insert. For
plug-style fixing, please be careful so that operator will not be forced on a viscometer.

4. Insert the boss of a bottom end of viscometer holder into the hole of soleplate of the
light guide holder. (Fig. 12 and Fig. 13)

5. Fix viscometer holder with viscometer to the top plate of light guide holder by
dedicated screw, and then attach N-tube adapter and K-tube adapter to each tube
end, then fix them by clips, then place tube hole cover to avoid evaporation of bath
medium. (Fig. 14 to Fig. 16)

4.2 Setting of Printing Paper Roll
(1) Turn MAIN switch of AKV-202 ON.
(2) Push green button to open printer cover.

(3) Set new paper roll to the printer.


(4) Close the printer cover. The paper will be fed and then cut automatically.

4.3 Power ON

Turn MAIN switch ON, the following Standby screen appears on the display.
Selection of the test mode and bath temperature can be done from this screen.
If you push FUNCTION key while this screen is displayed, display changes to Sample ID
input Screen/ Photo Monitoring Screen.

4.4 Start of bath temperature control

! Caution: Do not set bath temperature more than 50oC in the


case of ion exchange water, distilled water, pure
water is used. High temperature damages light guide
of meniscus detector.

! Caution: For the first time of using after installation,


temperature calibration by certified thermometer for
all preset temperature to be used is necessary. For
detail, refer AKV-202 Maintenance Manual.

Move cursor to “Preset”, and then change preset number by Up-Down keys. Display
shows preset temperature*4.
Push BATH CONT. key to start bath temperature control. Temperature Control RUN
Lump (green) turns on, and heater turns on*5.
*4: Up to 6 preset point can be registered. For the procedure of registration, refer
AKV-202 Maintenance Manual.
*5: Heater output status can be confirmed by heater output indicator (red LED in
measurement unit leaning to the left).
When LED is lighting, heater output is full (100%). When LED is lights-out, there is
no heater output. In most case, LED is blinking and it means heater turns on
intermittently.

In addition, a heater may be breaking when 0% (lights-out) state continues for a long
time.

4.5 Select Test Mode


Move the cursor to the channel which you want to test by Left-Right key, and then
change Mode No.*6 by Up-Down key.
*6: Up to 20 test modes can be registered to the unit. For the detail, refer AKV-202
Maintenance Manual.

4.6 Enter Sample ID and operator name.

4.6.1 Recall registered sample ID and operator name


(1) Move the cursor to sample ID or operator name by Up-Down key.
(2) Push ENTER key, sample ID or operator name becomes reversing display.
(3) Push Up-Down key to select sample ID or operator name.
(4) Move the cursor to Print, and then change from Disable to Enable
(5) Push ENTER key to be settled.

4.6.2 Edit registered sample ID and operator name


(1) Move the cursor to sample ID or operator name by Up-Down key.
(2) Push Left-Right key once, the cursor turns into 1 character width and becomes an
editing state.
(3) Push Left-Right key to move the cursor to the character to be changed, and then
push Up-Down key to change it.
(4) Push ENTER key to be settled.

4.7 Sample preparation


(1) Sample beaker should be washed by solvent and dried well before use.
(2) Take approx. 15ml of sample to the sample beaker.
(3) Pour the sample into L-tube of the viscometer*7 with care so that a sample does not
stick to lura of the L-tube. In addition, please pour the sample until sample overflows
to a K-tube.
(4) After sample pouring, set solvent dispenser to the L-tube*8.
*7: Please pour sample after confirming that bath temperature reaches setting
temperature, and is controlled.
*8: “CAP” appears on the display and solvent never come out if solvent dispenser is not
set.

5 Test Procedure

5.1 Test Start

! Warning: The tester is not to be operated unattended.


The tester emits an audible alarm in this case if
flammable cleaning/drying liquid leaks. For safety
reasons, an operator should always be in the same
room when the tester is running.

! Warning: If the tester makes any abnormal noises or exhibits


any abnormal behavior, stop operation
immediately, turn the power off at the mains, and
contact Tanaka Scientific Limited or an authorized
distributor.

Push START/STEP key*9, RUN lamp turns on, and then test is started.
*9: START key does not work when display shows sample ID input screen or photo
monitoring screen. Please return to standby screen, and then push START key.

<Test sequence goes automatically from now on.>

5.2 Test Sequence


(1) WAIT: Maintains the set constant temperature time of the sample. Refer to
“AKV-202 Maintenance Manual” for details of setting of the constant temperature
time.

(2) L_ADJUST: Adjusts the quantity of light. (“PAUSE” will appear when another
channel is currently undergoing cleaning.)

(3) SUCTION: Sucks up the sample to lead the sample to capillary.

(4) MEASURE: Measures the flow times through the “C” bulb and then “J” bulb. As the
“J” bulb timing completes, the printer will print out the result, and data will transmit
from the RS-232C interface. (“PAUSE” will appear when another channel is currently
being measured.)

The above concludes one test series and returns the device to a standby state.
If you continue a test, go to 4.4 Start of bath temperature control on 24.
If you finish testing, turn MAIN switch OFF.

6 Replacing parts, making self-diagnosis, and maintenance

6.1 Maintenance

6.1.1 Discharge of bath medium

! Warning: Burns may result from discharging high temperature bath


liquid. First confirm that the temperature of the bath
liquid has sufficiently decreased.

Bath liquid can be discharged by opening the valve on the bath liquid drain on the right
side of the bath.

6.1.2 Filling up of bath liquid


Remove rubber cap from bath inlet located in the right of bath lid and refill bath liquid
through that hole. Stop filling up when you confirm bath liquid overflows to the tank.

6.1.3 Discharging waste liquid


Place some container under the waste drain valve or connect a hose and lead other side
to a container. Open the waste tank valve and waste drain valve to discharge waste
liquid.

6.1.4 Filling up of cleaning solvents


Remove the lid of the solvent tank and add cleaning solvent. Completely close the cover
after filling up. The capacity of each tank is 2 liters.

6.2 Periodic Inspection


Periodical calibration of the temperature sensor should be performed. For detail, refer
AKV-202 Maintenance Manual.

6.3 Parts and Consumables


! Caution: Use only Tanaka Scientific Limited genuine
consumables, parts and accessories or such parts
as recommended by Tanaka Scientific Limited.

6.4 Problems and Solutions

! Warning: Do not make any modifications or alterations to the


tester without the approval of Tanaka Scientific
Limited.

! Warning: Do not attempt to repair the tester yourself. In the


event that the tester exhibits any abnormal
behavior whatsoever, contact Tanaka Scientific
Limited or an authorized distributor.

! Warning: Only Tanaka Scientific Limited service personnel


or authorized representatives are to repair the
tester.

Should the instrument become faulty, contact Tanaka Scientific Limited or an authorized
distributor. Contact details are provided with the product warranty at the end of this
manual.
Provide as much information as possible about the problem.
Equipment failures will be resolved in one of two ways:

1. Tanaka Scientific Limited will send a replacement part to the local distributor or
directly to the customer. The user or local distributor executes replacements and
inspections.
2. The customer will need to send part or all of the faulty equipment to Tanaka
Scientific Limited for repairs.

To troubleshoot simple problems, refer to the Maintenance Manual.

6.5 Period of Warranty


This instrument will be guaranteed for a period of one year from the date of delivery.
For details, see the Product Warranty at the end of this manual.

6.6 Period of Availability of Maintenance Tools


The tools and parts necessary for maintenance of this instrument are guaranteed to be
held by Tanaka Scientific Limited for a period of five years from the date of delivery of
the instrument.

7 Post-delivery Notes

7.1 Long Periods of Dormancy


When the instrument is not used for a long period of time, unplug the power cord from
the outlet.
It is recommended that the instrument is covered when in storage to reduce the impact
of dust and moisture.

7.2 Lost Instruction Manuals


This manual and the attached Maintenance Manual are part of the instrument. Should
you lose either manual, contact Tanaka Scientific Limited or an authorized distributor for
a new copy.
For safety, keep a copy of the address and telephone number of Tanaka Scientific
Limited or an authorized distributor.

7.3 Transfer
When transferring this instrument to a third party, be sure to contact Tanaka Scientific
Limited if the voltage or frequency of the power supply needs to be changed.
Be sure to transfer the instrument with this manual and the attached Maintenance
Manual.

7.4 Disposal
This instrument does not contain any hazardous materials, and can be disposed of as
ordinary industrial waste.

Product Warranty

1. This product has passed a quality assurance inspection to the standards of Tanaka Scientific
Limited.
2. This product will be warranted for a period of one year from the date of delivery.
To avoid later confusion, be sure to enter the date of delivery in warranty ticket below.
3. If any faults occur due to normal use within the warranty, the product will be repaired free of
charge.
4. Be sure to notify Tanaka Scientific Limited when repairs being requested are covered under the
warranty.
5. The following faults or damage are not covered by the warranty:
· Any fault or damage arising from failure to adhere to all warnings and precaution as described
in the instruction manual
· Any fault or damage arising from misuse or carelessness
· Any fault or damage arising from repairs or alterations unauthorized by Tanaka Scientific
Limited
· Any fault or damage arising from falls or accidents during transportation after the initial delivery
