Grade 9 Forces and Motion Part 1 2020-2021

Distance is the total length of the path traveled by an object, while displacement is the straight-line distance between the starting and ending points. Speed is the distance traveled per unit time, while velocity is the displacement per unit time and includes both magnitude and direction of motion. Distance can be greater than, equal to, or less than displacement, depending on whether the object's path is straight or not. Speed can be equal to or greater than velocity, with equality occurring if the object moves in a straight line in the same direction.

Forces and Motion

PART 1
Length of the actual path travelled
by a body
Distance
S.I unit : metre (m)
The change in the position of a body
in a particular direction.

It is the shortest distance between

the initial position and the final
position of the body.
Displacement
The magnitude of displacement may
be equal to or less than the distance
travelled by the object.

S.I unit : metre (m)

• Jill travels from A to B along
the blue dotted line path.

• The length of the path

travelled by Jill is 500m. So
she travels a distance of 500
m

• The straight-line separation

between initial and final
positions A and B is 75 m
• Change in position of Jill is
75 m from A to B.
• So the displacement of Jill is
75 m from A to B
• What is the
shortest distance
between A and B?
• 75 m
• Displacement is
the shortest
distance between
the initial and final
positions
• What is the distance and displacement of
John
(a) when he travels from home to factory?
• Distance = 200 m
• Displacement = 120 m from home to
factory
(b) when he travels from factory to home?
• Distance = 200 m
• Displacement = 120 m from factory to
home

1. Is the distance travelled by John same in both cases?

2. Is the displacement of John same in both cases?
• Distance travelled by John is same in both cases.
• Displacement of 200 m from home to factory is not same
as displacement of 200 m from factory to home.
• The value (also called magnitude) is the same, but the
directions are opposite.
• What is the distance and displacement of
John
(a) when he travels from home to factory?
• Distance = 200 m
• Displacement = 120 m from home to
factory
(b) when he travels from factory to home?
• Distance = 200 m
• Displacement = 120 m from factory to
home
(c) in his overall journey from home to
factory and then back home?
• Distance = 400 m
• Displacement = 0 m

Distance travelled by John is .greater.. than his displacement

Fill in the blanks choosing any of these two words below:
greater lesser
Jill travels from A to B along the Jill travels from A to B and then back to
straight-line path AB. A along the straight-line path between
A and B.
1. What is the distance she travels?
75 m 1. What is the distance she travels?
2. What is her displacement? 150 m
75 m from A to B 2. What is her displacement?
0m
Jill travels from B to A along the
straight-line path AB.

1. What is the distance she travels?

75 m
2. What is her displacement?
75 m from B to A
Distance travelled by a body will be equal to the
magnitude of its displacement if it moves in a straight-line
path between the two positions in the same direction.

Distance travelled by a body can be equal to or greater

than the magnitude of its displacement.
Speed of a body
• It is the ratio of distance travelled by
a body to the time taken

• Speed = distance travelled ÷ time taken

• S. I unit: m / s
Velocity of a body

• It is ratio of displacement of a body to

the time taken

• Velocity = displacement ÷ time taken

• S. I unit: m / s
• Jill travels from A to B along the blue • Jill travels from A to B and then back to A
dotted-line path in 5 s along the blue dotted-line path in 10 s
1. What is her speed? 1. What is her speed?
100 m / s 100 m / s
2. What is her velocity? 2. What is her velocity?
15 m / s from A to B 0m/s

• Jill travels from B to A along the

blue dotted-line path in 5 s
1. What is her speed?
100 m / s
2. What is her velocity?
15 m / s from B to A
Speed of a body will be equal to the magnitude of its
velocity if it moves in a straight-line path between the two
positions in the same direction.

Speed of a body can be equal to or greater than the

magnitude of its velocity.
• Direction of motion of the body is in the direction of its
velocity
• Red car has a velocity of 25 m / s to the right.
So it moves to the right and makes a displacement of 25 m in 1 s.
• Green car moves with a velocity of 35 m / s to the left.
So it moves to the left and makes a displacement of 35 m in 1 s.
