This document provides an instructional plan for a 6th grade science lesson on mixtures. The lesson aims to describe the appearance of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. Students will observe samples of different mixtures, such as sugar water and flour water, and record their observations. They will describe whether the mixtures appear uniform or non-uniform, and if the components can be distinguished from each other. The lesson involves hands-on activities where students prepare mixtures in small groups and use graphic organizers to record and compare their observations. The goal is for students to understand the characteristics that distinguish homogeneous from heterogeneous mixtures.

E. Values Integration
III. Learning Tasks  Review
1. What is a mixture? (combination of 2 or more substances)
2. What are the types of Mixtures? ( Homogeneous and Heterogeneous
Mixtures)
3. Give examples of Homogeneous Mixtures? (answer vary)
A. Engagement 4. Give examples of Heterogeneous Mixtures (answer vary)

1.What are they doing?(answers may vary)

2.Do you help your mother prepare food, for breakfast, linch, meriemda,
dinner?
3. What do you usually prepare for merienda?(answers may vary)
What are the ingredients in preparing juice and sandwiches?
4. Can you still distinguish the ingredients after mixing it?
While you are helping your mother in the kitchen, what are the things that
you should do in handling the materials?(We have to take extra care so
that we will not hurt ourselves specially when we use sharp objects and if
the materials that we used are harmful) Same when doing similar
activities in school.

In today’s lesson we are going to describe the appearance of uniform and

non-uniform mixtures.
1. What can you see from the picture? (mother and the children cooking
some food)
2.What food do you think they are preparing? (answers vary)
3. Do you help your Mother in preparing food? What do you usually
Teacher will present 2 sets of Mixture
A. Explore/ Set A- Homogeneous mixture (sugar and water)
Modeling Set B- Heterogeneous mixture (flour and water)
Teacher will ask the class to make an observation on the two sets of
mixture.
Teacher will use the comparative chart list to write down observations of
the pupils.

MIXTURES
Set A Set B
(Homogeneous Mixture) (Heterogeneous Mixture)

NOTE: The teacher asks questions; write down the expected answers
on the chart list.
 Teacher ask:
1. What kind of Mixture in Set A? (Homogeneous mixture)
2. What kind of mixture in Set B? (Heterogeneous mixture)
3. Describe the mixture in Set A and B using the phrases in the box.

 Become cloudy
 Form two layers
 Cannot be distinguish from each other
 Can be distinguish from each other
 Evenly distributed
 Not evenly distributed
 Uniform mixture
 Non-uniform mixture
4. In making the observations, what particular aspects or characteristics
you look into the two sets of mixture? (appearance)
 Built Vocabulary:
Today we will learn the meaning of Appearance.
 Appearance means the looks of the mixture, becoming visible to the
eyes. powdered milk, oil, gravel

Let’s do it this way (We Do)

1. Half-fill the four glasses with tap water.
2. Put a teaspoon of salt in one glass. Stir. Label it as “Mixture A.”
3. Put a teaspoon of powdered milk in another glass. Stir. Label it “Mixture
B.”
4. Put a teaspoon of oil in the third glass. Stir. Label it as “Mixture C.”
5. Put a teaspoon of gravel in the fourth glass. Stir. Label it as “Mixture D.”
6. Leave the set-ups for about 1 minute. Observe each set-up. Compare
them.
7. Fill in the table below.(Together with the teacher pupils will be fiiling in the
table.
Skills: Identifying, Describing, Observing, Communicating

Questions:
1. Which mixtures can you not distinguish the components?
2. Which mixtures can you still distinguish the components? Give the
components.

This time ,you are going to make an activity on the appearance of

Homogeneous mixture and Heterogeneous mixture.
1. Pre-Activity
•Divide the class into 4 groups
•Set standards
1. Follow instructions very well.
2. Be careful in handling materials
3. Cooperate with your groups
4. Share useful ideas
5. Work harmoniously
6. Be conscious of the time
7. Practice CLAYGO (Clean As You Go)
Note: To ensure massive participation of group members you can add the
number or amount of the materials in each group. Regroup the member
into smaller group then let them work by buddy. Assign only one leader
from Big Group to do the reading of procedures and one secretary to write
down the collected data but in a consolidated form.
•Distribute the Task Cards and Materials to the group needed for the activity.
 Allow 15 minutes for group activity.
Activity Proper
•Activity for all.
•Allow 15 minutes for group activity.
 Group 1-Concept Mapping

Note: It is important that the teacher will move around to monitor the
activity of the lesson to be able to assess if the learners are doing the
things correctly/ properly and to be able to provide immediate assistance to
the struggling group/s.
 Let each group record the observation on the assigned graphic organizer.
TASK CARD
DESCRIBING APPEARANCE OF THE HOMOGENEOUS AND
HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES
Activity: How do I look?
Guide Questions:
1. What was formed when you mixed each set of standard? (Mixture)

cooperation among members)

 Mixed substances can be classified as Heterogeneous Mixture or

Homogeneous Mixtures depending on the appearance of the
resulting mixture.
 The appearance of Heterogeneous mixture the components can
be classified or cab be distinguish from each other. Particles of
the substance are not evenly distributed and form two or more
layers.
 The appearance of Homogeneous mixture the components are
uniform throughout cannot be distinguished or cannot be seen
from each other and particles are evenly distributed.
 Examples of Homogeneous mixtures are dye in water, coco milk
in water and sea water.
 Examples of Heterogeneous mixture are coco crunch and water,
cooking oil and vinegar, mixture of two or more peanuts, flour
and water.
Directions:
Describe what will happen to the appearance of the following liquids when
mixed with water. Write become cloudy, formed two layers, clear, can be
distinguish from each other, no layers form, cannot be distinguish from
each other, uniform, non-uniform.
