Question 1

a) The positioning of the vibration sensors is critical for fault detection.

Acting as condition monitoring system designer, discuss the components of vibration
signal collected from the four locations (A, B, C, D) shown in Figure 1 indicating which is
the best location to detect bearing faults. (8 marks)

b) A shaft carries three masses at planes A, B and C. Planes B and C are 60 cm and 120 cm
from A respectively. Masses of A, B and C are 50 kg, 40 kg and 60 kg respectively and at a
radius of 2.5 cm from the axis of rotation. The angular position of mass B and mass C
relative to A are 90 and 210 degrees respectively. Find the position and magnitude of
balancing mass required at 10 cm radius in planes L and M midway between A and B,
and B and C. (12 marks)
Question 2

a) How can we differentiate between unbalance and Misalignment of rotating machines

given that both generated at 1X?
Suggest TWO options for the solution. (6 marks)

b) Why is phase information important for diagnosing machinery problems?

Please provide TWO examples of fault detection using phase information. (6 marks)

c) Gearbox spectrum was similar to one shown in Figure 2, identify the possible faults and
discuss the failure signature. (4 marks)

d) Explain the connection between sampling rate and aliasing and the function of an anti-
aliasing filter. (4 marks)
Question 3

a) You are using an FFT analyser. Taking N, the number of time-domain sample points, to
be 4096, how long would your sample need to be to achieve a useful frequency range of
10 kHz?
What frequency resolution would these settings provide? (2 marks)

b) Describe ‘demodulation’. From the vibration spectrum of a 14MW gearbox presented in

Figure 3, what frequency band-pass would you employ in order to undertake
demodulation analysis in an attempt to identify bearing defects?
The defect frequencies for all bearings employed in this gearbox lie between 14Hz to
50Hz.
Data labelled on the spectrum are for information only. (7 marks)

c) Vibration spectrum of a deep groove ball bearing is shown in Figure 4, the specification
of the bearing is listed as follows:
 No. of balls is 9
 Diameter of the ball is 8.5mm
 Pitch diameter is 38.5mm
 Angle of contact is 0
 Shaft running at speed of 2400RPM
