1 Intro To Mineral Exploration

This document provides an introduction to mineral exploration, defining key terms and outlining the stages of exploration. It begins with definitions of minerals, rocks, ores and other terms. It then describes the basic steps in mining as prospecting and exploration to find ore bodies, feasibility studies to evaluate financial viability, development to access the ore, exploitation for large-scale production, and mine closure. The stages of exploration are described as reconnaissance, large area prospecting, prospecting, general exploration, detailed exploration and ongoing exploration. Factors for planning exploration programs and relevant codes for mineral reporting and permits in the Philippines are also summarized.

WHAT IS MINERAL
EXPLORATION?
Prospecting & Exploration are activities that will
investigate an evidence (outcrop / prospect) of
mineral occurrence and outline its size and
character.
Prospecting & Exploration are activities that
involves the collective efforts of geologists,
geophysicist, geochemists, metallurgists, mining
engineers, chemists, lawyers, and politicians.
PROSPECTING AND
EXPLORATION
PROSPECTING

– search for ore or for geological occurrence that have the

potential of being an ore body

EXPLORATION

– defined as the activities of evaluating a geologic prospect

to determine its size, shape, grade, and profit potential.
