What are Management Systems?
• Management systems are sets of policies, processes and
procedures used by an organization to ensure that it can
fulfill the tasks required to achieve its objectives.
• It is the way in which an organization manages the inter-
related parts of its business in order to achieve its
objectives.
• These objectives cover many aspects of the organization's
operations (including financial success, safe operation,
product or service quality, operational efficiency,
environmental performance, health and safety in the
workplace, client relationships, legislative and regulatory
conformance and worker management).
• For instance, an environmental management system
enables organizations to improve their environmental
performance and an occupational health and safety
management system (OHSMS) enables an organization to
control its occupational health and safety risks, etc.
What are Management Systems?

• Management systems are therefore tools that help an

organization continually improve its health, safety, and
environmental performance.
• They contain organizational elements that follow a
continuous cycle of planning, implementing, checking
and improving.
• They are designed to continually identify and control
health, safety and environmental hazards and decrease
associated risks at the work place.
• Many parts of the management system are common to
a range of objectives, but others may be more specific.
Elements of a Management System

• A simplification of the main aspects of a

management system is the 4-element "Plan, Do,
Check, Act" approach.
• A complete management system covers every
aspect of management and focuses on supporting
the performance management to achieve the
objectives.
• The management system should be subject to
continuous improvement as the organization
learns.
Elements of a Management System

• Since Management Systems are systematic

frameworks designed to manage an organization's
policies, procedures and processes and promote
continual improvement within.
• The implementation of a proven and effective
Management System, such as ISO 9001 Quality
Certification, can help a business to improve
operations, manage risk and promote stakeholder
confidence.
ISO Management System Standards (MSS)

• ISO management system standards (MSS) help

organizations improve their performance by
specifying repeatable steps that organizations
consciously implement to achieve their goals and
objectives, and to create an organizational culture
that reflexively engages in a continuous cycle of
self-evaluation, correction and improvement of
operations and processes through heightened
employee awareness and management leadership
and commitment.
ISO Management System Standards (MSS)

• MSS are the result of consensus among

international experts with expertise in global
management, leadership strategies, and efficient
and effective processes and practices.
• MSS standards can be implemented by any
organization, large or small.
Examples of Management System Standards
• ISO 9000: standards for quality management systems (QMS)
• ISO 14000: standards for environmental management systems
• ISO/IEC 20000: standards for service management systems (SMS)
• FitSM: standards for lightweight IT service management
• ISO/IEC 27000: information security management systems (ISMS)
• ILO-OSH: standard for occupational health and safety
management systems
• ISO 45001: standard for occupational health and safety
management systems
• ISO 50001: standard for energy management systems
• ISO 55000: standards for asset management systems
• SA8000: social accountability.
• IAEA: management system safety standards
• Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3)
ISO 45001:2018 - Occupational Health and
Safety Management System
The need for ISO 45001
• Over 7 600 people die each day from work-related
accidents or diseases - that’s over 2.78 million every
year.
• The burden of occupational injuries and diseases is
significant, both for employers and the wider economy,
resulting in losses from early retirements, staff absence
and rising insurance premiums.
• To combat the problem, ISO has developed a new
standard, ISO 45001, Occupational health and safety
management systems - Requirements, that will help
organizations reduce this burden by providing a
framework to improve employee safety, reduce
workplace risks and create better, safer working
conditions, all over the world.
ISO 45000
• The standard was developed by a committee of
occupational health and safety experts, and follows
other generic management system approaches
such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.
• It will take into account other International
Standards in this area such as OHSAS 18001, the
International Labour Organization's ILO-
OSH Guidelines, various national standards and the
ILO's international labour standards and
conventions.
ISO 45000

• An Occupational Health and Safety Management

Systems (OHS-MS) determines and continually
improves an organizations health and safety
position and performance.
• It follows an outline and is managed like any other
facet of a business, such as with marketing or
engineering functions.
ISO 14000 family - Environmental
Management System
• The ISO 14000 family of standards provides practical
tools for companies and organizations of all kinds
looking to manage their environmental responsibilities.
• ISO 14001:2015 and its supporting standards such as
ISO 14006:2011 focus on environmental systems to
achieve this.
• The other standards in the family focus on specific
approaches such as audits, communications, labelling
and life cycle analysis, as well as environmental
challenges such as climate change.
• The ISO 14000 families of standards are developed by
ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 207 and its various
subcommittees.
ISO 14001:2015
• It is an International Standard for Environmental
Management System (EMS).
• It has the familiar structure of any Quality
Management System i.e. “plan, do, check and act”
elements in cycles of continuous improvement.
• It has been specifically developed to manage the
environmental performance of a company or a
facility in a structured manner.
• ISO 14001 system is related to the ISO 9000 Quality
Management System and HSE-MS but with
increased emphasis on environmental aspects.
ISO 14001:2015
• ISO 14001:2015 sets out the criteria for an
environmental management system and can be
certified to.
• It maps out a framework that a company or
organization can follow to set up an effective
environmental management system.
• It can be used by any organization regardless of its
activity or sector.
• Using ISO 14001:2015 can provide assurance to
company management and employees as well as
external stakeholders that environmental impact is
being measured and improved.
• Environmental management systems (EMSs) are
designed to continually identify and control
environmental hazards and decrease their associated
risks at the workplace.
ISO 14001 is committed to:

• The need to comply with legislation.

• Commitment to a programme of continuous
environmental improvement.
• It requirement for external verification by an
independent accredited organisation.
ISO 14001- How it works
• ISO 20121 offers guidance and best practice to help you
manage your event and control its social, economic and
environmental impact.
• Every action counts, from relying on tap water instead
of plastic bottles to encouraging use of public
transport. It also helps organizations cut unnecessary
costs.
• ISO 20121’s flexible approach means that it can be used
for all types of events, from music festivals to school
outings.
• The standard has been developed with input from
many different stakeholders, including representatives
from the event industry, to make it practical and useful.
• It addresses all stages of an events’ supply chain, and
includes monitoring and measuring guidelines.

Why ISO 14000 Certification?

• To provide assurance to shareholder that the

system is functioning
• To reduce associated risks in SPDC operations to as
low as reasonably practicable.
• Due to inherent pressure to maintain performance.
Once an external body verifies an EMS, the verifier
will return regularly (typically every half year) to
check if the system is still functioning.
Benefits of ISO 14OO1

• Improvement in Environmental Performance.

• Excellence in Operations.
• Competence development of staff.
• Cut in Energy/Material wastage. (Glycerol, diesel).
• Harmonious relationship with host communities.
• EMS system working and effective.
• Waste management initiatives.
• Confidence in the system.
• Reduction in environmental incidents
ISO/IEC 27000 family- Information Security
Management Systems
• An ISMS is a systematic approach to managing sensitive
company information so that it remains secure.
• It includes people, processes and IT systems by applying
a risk management process.
• It can help small, medium and large businesses in any
sector keep information assets secure.
• An Information Security Management System
determines how your organization should organize and
manage its information security.
• The security of information is a major concern to
consumers and companies alike, fuelled by a number
of high-profile cyber attack.
ISO/IEC 27000 family- Information Security
Management Systems
• The ISO/IEC 27000 family of standards helps
organizations keep information assets secure.
• Using this family of standards will help
organizations manage their security of assets such
as financial information, intellectual property,
employee details or information entrusted to you
by third parties.
• ISO/IEC 27001 is the best-known standard in the
family providing requirements for an Information
Security Management System (ISMS).
Certification to ISO/IEC 27001
• Like other ISO management system standards,
certification to ISO/IEC 27001 is possible but not
obligatory.
• Some organizations choose to implement the
standard in order to benefit from the best practice
it contains while others decide they also want to
get certified to reassure customers and clients that
its recommendations have been followed. ISO does
not perform certification.
• ISO/IEC 27001 was developed by the ISO/IEC joint
technical committee JTC 1.
ISO 22000 family - Food Safety
Management System
• The ISO 22000 family of International Standards
addresses food safety management.
• The consequences of unsafe food can be serious and
ISO’s food safety management standards help
organizations identify and control food safety hazards.
• As many of today's food products repeatedly cross
national boundaries, International Standards are
needed to ensure the safety of the global food supply
chain.
• A Food Safety Management System confirms that
corporations in the food industry follow certain
procedures and guidelines to ensure their products for
customer safety.
The Purpose of ISO 22000
• ISO 22000:2018 sets out the requirements for a
food safety management system and can be
certified to.
• It maps out what an organization needs to do to
demonstrate its ability to control food safety
hazards in order to ensure that food is safe.
• It can be used by any organization regardless of its
size or position in the food chain.
ISO 37001:2016- Anti-bribery
Management System
• ISO 37001 specifies a series of measures to help
organizations prevent, detect and address bribery.
• These include adopting an anti-bribery policy,
appointing a person to oversee anti-bribery
compliance, training, risk assessments and due
diligence on projects and business associates,
implementing financial and commercial controls,
and instituting reporting and investigation
procedures.
ISO 37001:2016- Anti-bribery
Management System
• It is designed to help organizations implement an anti-
bribery management system, or enhance the controls
they currently have.
• It helps to reduce the risk of bribery occurring and can
demonstrate to your stakeholders that you have put in
place internationally recognized good-practice anti-
bribery controls.
• ISO 37001 can be used by any organization, large or
small, whether it be in the public, private or voluntary
sector, and in any country.
• It is a flexible tool, which can be adapted according to
the size and nature of the organization and the bribery
risk it faces.
ISO 9000 family - Quality Management
System
• The ISO 9000 family addresses various aspects of quality
management and contains some of ISO’s best known
standards.
• A quality management system (QMS) is defined as a
formalized system that documents processes, procedures,
and responsibilities for achieving quality policies and
objectives.
• A QMS helps coordinate and direct an organization’s
activities to meet customer and regulatory requirements
and improve its effectiveness and efficiency on a continuous
basis.
The 9000 family of standards provide guidance and tools for
companies and organizations who want to ensure that their
products and services consistently meet customer’s
requirements, and that quality is consistently improved.
ISO 9000 family - Quality management
• ISO 9001:2015 sets out the criteria for a quality
management system and is the only standard in the family
that can be certified to (although this is not an obligation).
• It can be used by any organization, large or small, regardless
of its field of activity. In fact, there are over one million
companies and organizations in over 170 countries certified
to ISO 9001.
• This standard is based on a number of quality management
principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation
and implication of top management, the process approach
and continual improvement.
• Using ISO 9001:2015 helps ensure that customers get
consistent, good quality products and services, which in turn
brings many business benefits.
Certification to ISO 9001:2015
• Checking that the system works is a vital part of ISO
9001:2015.
• It is recommended that an organization performs
internal audits to check how its quality
management system is working.
• An organization may decide to invite an
independent certification body to verify that it is in
conformity to the standard, but there is no
obligation for this.
• Alternatively, it might invite its clients to audit the
quality system for themselves.
Need for Management System
Certification
Every business has three basic challenges that threaten
their success:
• Comply with customer requirements and government
regulations and standards.
• Protect the organization through embedding quality
and instituting best practices.
• Grow the organization, extending the customer reach
and satisfaction, thereby increasing revenue.
Management systems allow organizations to meet
these challenges by instilling best practices and
validating, through certification, that they are properly
established in the company.
