(Metro System and Engineering) - Puspal Dey

This document provides an overview of metro systems and metro stations. It discusses that metro systems are heavy railways that serve urban areas with exclusive rights-of-way. There are two main types of metro systems in India - high capacity and light capacity. Metro stations are mostly located underground, at ground level, or elevated above roads. Stations can be classified by their elevation or track arrangement into underground, on-grade, or elevated stations with center, side, or stacked platforms. Metros are needed because they reduce traffic, pollution, and land encroachment while providing scheduled, frequent, and comfortable train service. The advantages of metros include congestion easing and speed while the disadvantages are related to cost and disruption.

Metro System and Engineering

College.
Topic – Overview on Metros and Needs of Metros.
Metro System:-
Metro systems refer to the heavy railways with exclusive rights-of-way
serving the urban areas of the cities.
So basically metro system is one of the most useful transport system
available right now. The following metro systems are mainly available in
India right now—
i) High Capacity Metro System: Metro system is a grade separated
dedicated system for high peak hour traffic densities exceeding 40,000
PHPDT. It is characterized by short distances of stations spaced at 1 km,
high acceleration and declaration and average speeds of 30-35 kmph.
ii) Light Capacity Metro System: This is a dedicated metro rail system for
moderate peak hour traffic densities exceeding 8000 PHPDT.
Metro Station:-
• A metro station or a subway station is a
railway station for a rapid transit system,
which as a whole is usually called a
“metro” or “subway”.
• Most stations are located underground, with entrances/exits leading
at ground or street level
• In other cases a station is may be elevated above a road or at ground
level depending on the level of the train tracks.
Types of Metro Station:-
Metro stations are classified in two types –
a) By elevation with respect to grade.
b) By track arrangement.
Further they are classified as –
a) By elevation with respect to grade:- Fig.-On Grade Station
(1). Underground Stations.
(2). On Grade Stations.
(3). Elevated Stations.
b) By track arrangement:-
(1). Center Platform.
(2). Side Platform.
(3). Stacked Platform. Fig.-Elevated Station
Needs for Metros:-
• No traffic jams:- The metro railway plies mostly on its own underground track,
which is not disturbed by other railway tracks or roadways. Hence, there are no
chances of traffic jams.
• No pollution:- Metro rails run on electricity. Hence, the level of pollution caused
is almost negligible.
• Less encroachment of land:- Metro rails run through the underground. Land
use on the surface is usually not disturbed. Hence, there is very little need of
encroachment of land.
• Scheduled running of trains:- Metro rails run at small intervals. Unlike roadways
and surface railways there are usually no delays and the train service is very
frequent. This helps to maintain the work culture in the metropolitan cities.
• Comfortable journey:- Metro trains run very fast and usually most of the trains
are air conditioned. Hence, journey by metro railway is very comfortable.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Metro:-
• Advantages
· Congestion easing
· Ease of transport to and from outlying regions
· Air conditioning
· Safe transport
· Speed
· Modernity
· Accessibility
• Disadvantages
· Cost
· Disruption
· Loss of control
