Midterm Examination
Midterm Instructions: Answer the following questions as directed. Total Number of Items:
Exam 100 points
1. You will select a place where you live in which you are extremely familiar,
preferably one you have visited a few times and where there are lots of
environmental issues. In addition to your own experience with this urban
neighborhood, you analyze the location and its neighborhood from a social and
environmental perspective.
After you have selected your urban neighborhood or particular location, answer the
following questions.
a. What are the main attributes of the built environment of this neighborhood (e.g.,
size or existence of sidewalks; width of streets; height or size of most buildings or
homes)?
This Area is located in Manila, I visited my brother’s house which is
located in Manuyo Dos, Las Piñas City, last December 7, 2021 until January 20,
2022. This Area are mostly a lot of buildings, factory, companies. The streets
standard is national highway measurements with two lanes . Large company
that may have a 20 stories. Logistic company is mostly located there.
b. What are the main environmental attributes (i.e., proximity to greenspace or
water; habitat)? Is there a lot of vegetation in this neighborhood?
The main environmental attributes is nearest in water, those water
found in river but those rivers lot a of company waste. There are few plants
and trees, because this area is more on large buildings. You can see there a
plants put in a pots. This area is a lot of environmental problem, like lack of
plants, trees, etc.
c. How do people use this neighborhood? Is the neighborhood full of pedestrians,
or are most people inside cars or buildings? What groups might feel welcome,
and which not, in this neighborhood? How easy is it to access this neighborhood
by different modes of transportation?
People around this area are mostly busy, they are not taking care the
environment, but not all, some of those people are in charge of cleaning the
area, and some of those are inside the building or their houses only. When we
say transportation they use cars and vehicles.
d. Does this neighborhood or place have historical or cultural significance? Was it
part of a redlined (or green) neighborhood?
2. You are going to analyze a human-environment scenario from the list below,
discuss components of the human-environment system at work in the scenario, and
then make an argument for or against a specific action based on an ethical position
you have chosen and assume it is taking place in your hometown.
Scenario 1:
a. What human and environmental components make up the system? How are they
affecting one another?
The company made a pledge by planting trees, in order to mitigate carbon
emission this the way to make up the system. But the also have a negative
impact, they maybe destroy the marine life specially in rivers and streams.
Company give a job to unemployed but destroy a resources in rivers and
streams.
b. Identify an ethical viewpoint with which you can identify and explain its basic
principle or conviction.
Companies, give us a job which is the way we getting pay which is good for us
but it had a negative impact in other life that maybe destroy the life of others.
c. Make an ethical argument for or against the proposed action in your scenario,
and provide an ethical justification for any argument you raise based on the
ethical viewpoint you selected. It does not matter if you are for or against the
action. What I want to see is that you recognize how your ethical framework
which led you to that decision.
The companies should do a fairness, why they should do that? Because if they
do that, it had a positive impact for us, and for the environment. Like, giving us
a job, and giving a healthy environment. Do in a legal way, which is a way to not
Scenario 2:
In an effort to shift toward renewable energy sources, your home city considers
building a new solar power plant. This solar plant would eliminate all reliance on non-
renewable energy for your city. To finance the plant construction, a temporary tax
increase is proposed, which would force some lower-income residents to leave.
d. What human and environmental components make up the system? How are they
affecting one another?
Renewable resources is one of the resources that we need. But it is not good to
force residents to leave, lower income-leave a city, no this not good, it may have
a bad impact to others.
e. Identify an ethical viewpoint with which you can identify and explain its basic
principle or conviction.
The lower residents leave a city, which is not good for them, by doing the solar
power plant, the residents force to leave but since those are only temporary tax
so they still stay to maintain their lives there.
f. Make an ethical argument for or against the proposed action in your scenario,
and provide an ethical justification for any argument you raise based on the
ethical viewpoint you selected. It does not matter if you are for or against the
action. What I want to see is that you recognize how your ethical framework
which led you to that decision.
Find safe place to build a solar power plant and maintain the residents or lower
income residents in located area give them a jobs, in order to pay the tax.
Scenario 3:
A new airport to serve a nearby large city is proposed to be built in your town. The
airport would provide hundreds of new jobs and give a major boost to the town’s
economy, with travelers utilizing local restaurants and hotels. The only possible
location to construct the new airport would be along a key migratory bird corridor,
displacing bird populations.
g. What human and environmental components make up the system? How are they
affecting one another?
The airport that built in my town is acceptable because it can boost our
economy and give us jobs but maintain the bird population in area in order to
maintain the freshness.
h. Identify an ethical viewpoint with which you can identify and explain its basic
principle or conviction.
A small number of animals like elks are introduced to your town, after having been
hunted out several decades before. To encourage the development of a new elk herd,
any intensive human activity on public lands is prohibited, including hunting for other
game such as deer. Many residents rely on meat from hunting as a food source
through the winter months.
j. What human and environmental components make up the system? How are they
affecting one another?
The human activity is avoided, like hunted. But it may affect their life because
they need meat in cold season. And it benefits to animals.
k. Identify an ethical viewpoint with which you can identify and explain its basic
principle or conviction.
It benefits to animals, to not be hunted in order to maintain freshness of
habitat.
In human benefits a freshness of environment.
l. Make an ethical argument for or against the proposed action in your scenario,
and provide an ethical justification for any argument you raise based on the
ethical viewpoint you selected. It does not matter if you are for or against the
action. What I want to see is that you recognize how your ethical framework
which led you to that decision.
An activity in town is avoided, like hunting, in order to eat meat in cold season
because it is stated in scenario that meat is source in winter months, to do that,
they try to make a piggery, or animals that not prohibited to eat in town.
3. Bonus: Give yourself a rating from 1 to 10 based on how well you grasp the
Environmental Science and Engineering topics. Support your rating with an
explanation.
