Assignment 1

This document contains 6 questions related to traffic flow parameters: 1) Calculates flow, density, time mean speed, and space mean speed using vehicle speeds and time to pass between points. 2) Shows the relationship between time mean speed and space mean speed. 3) Determines occupancy, density, and flow rate from vehicle speed and length data. 4) Calculates average journey time using floating car method observations. 5) Finds time headway, time gap, distance headway, distance gap, and flow using vehicle trajectory data. 6) Determines time mean speed, space mean speed, and flow using vehicle arrival times at two points.

Assignment -1

1. Four vehicles are traveling at constant speeds between sections X and Y (280
meters apart) with their positions and speeds observed at an instant in time. An
observer at point X observes the four vehicles passing point X during a period
of 15 seconds. The speeds of the vehicles are measured as 88, 80, 90, and 72
km/hr respectively. Calculate the flow, density, time mean speed, and space
mean speed of the vehicles.

2. Show that the relationship between the time mean speed (𝑣𝑡 ) and space mean
speed (𝑣𝑠 )
𝜎2
𝑣𝑡 = 𝑣𝑠 +
𝑣𝑠
3. The following dataset consists of 30 observations of vehicle speed and length
taken from a 6-m by 6-m inductive loop detector during a 60-second time
period. Determine the occupancy, density, and flow rate.
