Flat Plate Solar Collector

This lab report summarizes the student's experimentation with a flat plate solar collector. It describes how a flat plate collector works by absorbing solar radiation and transferring heat to fluid flowing through tubes. The report outlines the key components of flat plate collectors, including an absorber plate, tubes, transparent cover, and collector box. It also discusses different types of flat plate collectors and various heat transfer fluids that can be used. The report concludes that flat plate collectors are a cost-effective way to harness solar energy and heat water.

▪ Introduction
A Flat plate collector is a solar panel device that uses solar energy to
generate thermal energy. It converts solar power into thermal energy.
A Flat plate solar collector takes in solar radiation and transmits heat to
the functioning medium. It is suitable for several thermal applications.

Figure.1: Flat Plate Collector system.

▪ How Does A Flat Plate Collector Work?

Water flows through the tubes, absorbs solar heat and becomes hot.
The heated water is stored in a tank for further use.
The water stored in the tank remains hot overnight as the storage tank is
insulated and heat losses are small.

3
▪ Types of Flat Plate Collector
Basically it is divided into two types:
1. Natural
2. Forced
But, with the development of technology, there are other types:

5
▪ Components of Flat Plate Collector
The basic parts that make up a flat plate collector are:
i. The absorber plate.
ii. The tubes fixed to the absorber plate through which the liquid to be
heated flows.
iii. The transparent cover.
iv. The collector box.

▪ Heat transfer Fluid in Flat Plant Collector:

- Air
- Gases
- Water-Ag nanofluid,
- Water based Cu nanofluid,
- Water-Al2O3 nanofluid
- Water-CuO nanofluid
- Antifreeze mixture
- Thermal oil
- or some other suitable liquid.
These are used as the operational fluids inside the solar collector.

▪ How to Calculate The Efficiency?

𝑄𝑜𝑢𝑡
=
𝑄𝑖𝑛
∆𝑇 𝑚 𝐶𝑝
𝑄𝑜𝑢𝑡 = = ( 𝑈𝑛𝑖𝑡 𝑊 )
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒
M = Mass
∆𝑇= Difference in temperature of liquid before and after heating
Cp = specific heat capacity

𝑄𝑖𝑛 = 𝑅𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
𝑄𝑖𝑛 = 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 ∗ 𝑆𝑢𝑛𝑙𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑡 ( 𝑖𝑛 𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑡 ) = ( 𝑈𝑛𝑖𝑡 𝑊 )

If we use a solar simulator instead of the sun, The equation is as follows:

𝑄𝑖𝑛 = 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 ∗ 𝑠𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑡 (𝑖𝑛 𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑡 ) ∗ 𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑆𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 =

𝑄𝑖𝑛 > 𝑄𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝐴𝑙𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠

The Range of Performance :

Flat plate collectors are categorized as stationary collectors, having unity
concentration ratio and temperature range use for standard collectors
between 30 - 80 C ( 60% ).

7
▪ Conclusion
A Flat Plate Collector is a device acting as a heat exchanger. It converts
solar power into thermal energy.
It can gather solar energy and use it to heat water in the house for bathing,
washing, etc. Also, it can be used to heat hot tubs and swimming pools.
The FPCs prove to be more feasible than other water heating systems due
to their economical price, simple design, and easy installation. They
greatly help to save on energy bills.
