Welcome to the Workshop
Introduction
Rosi with things she made in the
workshop.
Welcome to Batik on Fabric +
Paper!
I’m Rosi Robinson, and I am
excited to be offering this
wonderful workshop which I
developed over many years
teaching art at Cumner House
School in East Sussex, England,
as well as throughout the UK
teaching at a variety of
specialist craft learning
centers.
Batik is one of those wonderful techniques that delivers great results with minimal efforts —
everything from cards to wearable art can be produced with this wonderful technique which
originated in Southeast Asia and has been adapted to Western tastes.

A Contemporary Paper Workshop
Framing a batik + paper project.
It should be said that this is a
contemporary workshop for
learning to work with Batik as a
wax resist. Students who are
expecting to learn traditional
Indonesian style batik surface
design will enjoy the introduction
section which follows.
From there we move on to
contemporary examples of working
with wax on papers and fabrics and
even explore working with waxy
crayons and rubbings in order to explore the variety of ways we can use wax as a resist.

Developing Imagery for Mixed Media Applications
Encaustic Wax + Watercolors on Paper from
Daniella Woolf
I am a fabric surface design artist
and I primarily use cold water fiber
reactive dyes in my work. That
being said, when working on paper
it is equally possible to get some
great effects using water colors,
india ink and more.
Daniella Woolf in her wonderful
online workshop “The Encaustic
Minimalist” explores working with
Encaustic Wax and Water colors
using a hot iron to apply the wax
and uses the finished paper as a
background to develop a more complex mixed media work of art.
In that sense, a mixed media artist might enjoy this workshop as a way of developing a body
of work on paper which can be incorporated into other works of art.

Batik + Fabric as Wearable & Decorative Art
Immersion Dyed T-Shirt Project
We touch on Batik as Wearable Art in
a fun project where I demonstrate
using Batik wax as a line resist and
dip or immersion dyeing.
In this section I show you how to
work with finished wearable blanks
you can buy from distribution --
both cotton and silk. Fun projects
which can be done with children
include transferring designs onto
fabric and creating outlines to hold
the dye within.
The design is protected with a layer of wax and the entire t-shirt in this case was dipped or
immersion dyed in a blue dye vat resulting in the wonderful finished wearable you see here.

In fact all of the techniques especially the mark making techniques we explore in this
workshop can be transferred to wearable art applications; they will work equally well on silk
as I demonstrate in a wonderful workshop on learning how to stripe wax resist and work with
a variety of colors.
The pillow you see here began as a square (blank) white square cushion cover, available
pre-stitched from distribution. Simple striping of wax and layering of color held with wax
achieved the final results. You too can get great results without mastering traditional
techniques, proving the contemporary use of batik wax in the dyer's studio holds a variety of
worthwhile applications in your work.
By the time you are done you will be able to produce many interesting things, including some
special suggested projects with notes on how I assembled them.

Batching and Finishing your Work
Rosi working in her studio.
It may surprise some people to
learn that when I work in a
painterly manner while I fix the
dyes by working on fabric
soaked in soda ash, I leave them
to dry for a long while naturally.
This is because I enjoy the purity
of the color, the depth in the
fabric, and the painterly effect I
get as a result.
If you plan to wear or use your
art in the home (as would be the
case with cloth napkins or table runners, for example) it is necessary to both batch and fix the
dyes as well as remove the wax. For that reason I do go into detail on how to do this as well.

“Boats on a Lake” - Batik on Cotton fabric.
As I mentioned, my forte as an artist is working in a Painterly Fashion. I take inspiration from
the landscape around me in my native England, the harbor lights and reflections in the water
from my summer home in Nova Scotia, as well as the commissions I am asked to perform
from time to time in a painterly manner.
I present at the end of the workshop a brief glimpse into my work in Painterly Art with Batik
as a Wax resist including a wonderful video Andrew Galli and I produced in 2007 when we first
met (seen here above). We are considering producing a follow-on workshop for Painterly
Batik so if this is something that you would enjoy learning, please let us know via the website
mail link.
