Module 2 - Three-Phase System With Balnced Load

This document discusses balanced three-phase systems with different load connections. It begins by defining a balanced load as one where the phase impedances are equal in magnitude and phase. It then discusses the four types of balanced three-phase connections: wye-wye, wye-delta, delta-delta, and delta-wye. For each connection type, it analyzes the relationship between phase and line voltages/currents. It also provides phasor diagrams and example problems/solutions for calculating values in wye-wye and wye-delta systems. The learning outcomes are to analyze and calculate quantities in different balanced three-phase connections.

Learning Outcomes
Analyze three-phase circuits in terms of phase and line
quantities for a different three-phase balanced load
connections
Apply circuit analysis techniques to three-phase circuits to
calculate line and phase-voltages and currents.
Calculate the real, reactive and apparent power developed in a
balanced three-phase system.

Balanced Three Phase Load

A balanced load is one in which the phase impedances are
equal in magnitude and in phase.

2
Balanced 3-∅ Source – Load Connections
Both the three phase source and the three phase load
can be connected either Wye or DELTA.
We have 4 possible connection types.
 Y-Y connection
 Y-∆ connection
 ∆-∆ connection
 ∆-Y connection
Balanced ∆ connected load is more common.
Y connected sources are more common.

Balanced Wye-Wye Connection

A balanced Y-Y system is a three phase system with a balanced
Y – connected source and balanced Y connected load.
