7 DA VINCIAN PRINCIPLES

Watch in Youtube: Leonardo Da Vinci | His life in 3 minutes (HD)

What are the characteristics of being a genius? Are geniuses being born or made? In
an interesting book “How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci: Seven Steps to Genius Every
Day”, on which this article is based, Gelb (2014) asks: How do you bring brilliance to
practice? How do you maintain vitality? How are you cultivating your various strengths and
skills, and how are you able to flourish in every dimension of your life?

In the lesson that follow you will learn a realistic approach, tested in practice, to apply the
basic elements of Leonardo's genius to enrich your life. As you develop powerful strategies
for creative thinking and new approaches to self-expression, you will discover an
exhilarating, original way to see and enjoy your world. You will learn validated strategies to
sharpen your senses, free up your unique intellect and harmonize your mind and body. You
will be making your life a work of art with Leonardo as your inspiration.

Can the basics of Leonardo's approach to learning and intelligence cultivation be abstracted
and applied in order to inspire and guide us towards realizing our own full potential?

Gelb (2014) emphasizes the Seven Da Vincian Principles below:

1. Curiosità—An insatiably curious approach to life and an unrelenting quest for continuous
learning.

How to Think like Da Vinci:

 Reading this and being in school, you are already applying the first Da Vincian
principle, the desire to know, to learn, and to grow is the powerhouse of knowledge,
wisdom, and discovery (Gelb, 2014).
 Always bring a notebook or journal with you, as Da Vinci did, so you can put your
thoughts down as soon as they happen.
 Hone your questioning skills
 Shift the initial focus away from finding the right answer but asking the right
question

2. Dimostrazione—A commitment to test knowledge through experience, persistence, and

a willingness to learn from mistakes.

Leonardo’s notes are written backwards and intended to be read in a mirror. Some scholars
suggest that this was done to protect his privacy, while others argue it is due to the fact
that he was left-handed. Decipher this quote using a mirror or flip it on your camera phone.

How to Think like Da Vinci:

 Learning to think like Leonardo requires the eye-opening work of questioning

our own opinions, assumptions, and beliefs.
 Create different affirmations intended to change not just the way you think but the
way you feel
 When you create your affirmations, start with the words, “I Feel” rather than “I Am.”
 Reflect on how you apply what you have learned from your most influential
experiences
 Learn from your mistakes and adversity

3. Sensazione—The continual refinement of the senses, especially sight, as the means to

enliven experience.

How to Think like Da Vinci:

 Practice silence
 Enhance your senses.
 Study the lives and works of your favorite artists.
 Savor and sensualize your experiences.

4. Sfumato (literally “Going up in Smoke”)—A willingness to embrace ambiguity, paradox,

and uncertainty.

How to Think like Da Vinci:

 Be comfortable with ambiguity

 Attune to your intuition and gut
 See the humor in everyday life
 Hold contradictory ideas in your mind
 Entertain paradox and irony

5. Arte/Scienza—The development of the balance between science and art, logic and
imagination. “Whole-brain” thinking.

How to Think like Da Vinci:

 Embrace whole-brain thinking

 Study the art of science and the science of art
 Learn to organize your ideas, plans, goals or thoughts by mind mapping

6. Corporalità—The cultivation of grace, ambidexterity, fitness, and poise.

How to Think like Da Vinci:

 Be fit, healthy and strong

 Make your body flexible and relaxed
 Beware of anger and avoid grievous moods.
 Exercise moderately.
 Keep your mind cheerful.
 Eat simple (i.e., vegetarian) food.
 Cultivate Ambidexterity
7. Connessione—A recognition of and appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things
and phenomena. Systems thinking.

How to Think like Da Vinci:

 Embrace whole-brain thinking

 Study the art of science and the science of art
 Practice mind maping
