2. Imagine that you are the Chief Consultant of the Vishnumati Bridge Extension
project, Kathmandu. Write the first quarterly progress report in a memo format.
A proper review of the site to determine the existing condition of the site was done.
The site was found to be at minimum risk. Hence, it is safe for the construction of the
bridge.
The required changes were made in the proposed design after the survey.
All the resources including construction materials and human resources were
organized and a plan was made for the optimal utilization of all the resources.
Work remaining
To meet the target for the first quarter, we still need to accomplish the followings:
i. Construction of sub-structure
We still need to complete the construction of the sub-structure to meet our target. The
construction of the sub-structure includes excavation, concreting, and dewatering. We
have already started the process and hope to finish the construction of the sub-
structure by this quarter.
Problems Encountered
i. Unseasonal rain:
Four days of heavy rainfall has affected our project tremendously. There has been a
slight delay in our project and some of our raw materials were damaged.
Kalanki to Teku is a pretty busy place in Kathmandu and it has been difficult for us to
avoid people around our construction site. Most people use this road to travel to work
and it has been difficult for us to provide an alternative to them.
Conclusion:
Moreover, the project has been running pretty smoothly. Despite some struggles, we were able to
finish 17% of the total work by now and we plan on running our project more smoothly at a good
pace to reach our target and finish the project within the allocated time.
Recommendation:
We would like the company to contact the local government and publish a notice regarding our
project so that people would not travel through this road.

REPORT NO: R37
Development of Information Technology
Introduction
Information technology (IT) is the use of computers to store, retrieve, transmit, and
manipulate data or information. IT is typically used within the context of business
operations as opposed to personal or entertainment technologies. IT is considered to be a
subset of information and communications technology (ICT). Information and
Communication Technologies are increasingly at the core of strategies aimed at securing
the goals of sustainable development and stimulating economic growth in countries around
the world. These technologies are also impacting social interactions, public services, and
modes of education. And precisely due to these factors the Government of Nepal has
placed a great deal of importance on the transformative potential of ICTs for the overall
development of the country.
Despite starting with a massive earthquake in 2015 which led to a slight pause in the
development of IT in Nepal, we have been doing pretty well in the factor of Information
Technology. Ending the decade long load shedding problem in 2016 has also helped us to
pave our way towards digitization. In the past five years, there has been a significant
increase in the availability of technology to the general public along with its use in public
services. There has been the establishment of many startup companies focusing on
Information Technology and the research in the field of Information Technology has also
increased in large number. The recent coronavirus pandemic has caused a break in the
establishment of startup companies and research. However, the use of technology in day to
day life has increased in a large number.
Findings
i. Achievement in last 5 years:
1. Nepal has enjoyed incredible success in digital adoption, with mobile penetration
exceeding 100% and Internet penetration reaching 63%. According to the NTA,
there was an addition of 2.25 million new Internet users in 2017 alone, translating
into approximately 250 new Internet users every hour.
REPORT NO: R37
2. As of 2020 April, there are more than 39 ISPs available in Nepal, and it is
forecasted that almost 90% of the population in Nepal has the access to the
internet either through ISPs or mobile data by September 2020.
3. Almost every school in the country is has excess to at least one computer and
internet facility.
4. By October 2019, almost 9 million people were using online banking or mobile
banking and it is believed to have increased by 20% by 2020.
5. The growing popularity of social media is a crucial driver for Internet adoption in
Nepal. As of January 2018, Nepal has nearly 9.3 million Facebook users and more
than 6.4 million registered users on YouTube. People are also building their
carrier on social media.
7. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, almost every educational institute has switched
to an online format increasing the use of Information Technology.
Prospect
For improvement in Information Technology, we must focus more on the research aspect and
work on developing new technologies in this sector. The government can start this by
specifically allocating a special budget and team to work on this sector to provide special
training to the youths in Information Technology. Although most people have internet access, its
cost seems to be expensive. Especially to the people using mobile data. The government can
subsidize it to provide mobile data to people at an affordable price. We also have to encourage
startup IT companies to carry out the research and development of new technologies in this
sector.
4. Imagine that you are interested in undertaking the reconstruction of one of the
historical monuments-Dharahara- destroyed by the devastation earthquake of April
25, 2015. Write abstract, technical section and time management sections of your
proposal to be submitted to the ministry of culture.
A PROPOSAL FOR
RECONSTRUCTION OF DHARAHARA

NEPAL
27TH NOVEMBER
Abstract
Dharahara was the tallest building in Nepal and it holds a significant historical value. Built by
Bhimsen Thapa Dharahara comprised of towers; one eleven-story building and the next 9-storey
building were built in 1824 AD and 1832 AD respectively. The 11-storey building couldn't
survive the massive earthquake of 15th January 1934 but the 9-storey building was renovated to
fully restore it to its original form by then Prime minister, Juddha Shamsher.
After the massive earthquake on 25th April 2015, the structure of Dharahara collapsed and only
its base survived. It has been more than five years since that incident and it is high time that we
start the reconstruction of this historical site. It carries a huge cultural and historical importance
and we have come up with a plan for a reconstruction of the site that adds a modern touch to it
along with the preservation of its core values.
Technical Section
"The new Dharahara" or the reconstructed Dharahara will have the essence similar to the
original one, however, it will be equipped with modern facilities.
i. It will be 154 ft. tall with 11-storey and there will be a balcony garden in the 10th
storey where people can enjoy the view of the entire Kathmandu valley.
ii. The government has allocated 42 ropani (229,992 sq. feet) for the reconstruction of the
new Dharahara. However, only 33,000 sq. feet will be used for the construction of the
main building. The remaining area will be used for the construction of a beautiful garden
surrounding the building and a restaurant serving local Nepali cuisines for the people to
enjoy an authentic Nepali meal.
iii. The building will be designed in a disable friendly way. There will be ramps along with
the stairs in the entrance and unlike the old Dharahara we will have elevators and lifts
along with the stairs.
iv. The building has an emergency exit on every floor.
• The building will have underground parking with the capacity to allow around 300
Four-wheelers and open parking space around the corner with the capacity to allow
around 600 two-wheelers.
Time management section
The reconstruction of Dharahara will begin on 14th December 2020 and the reconstruction
will be accomplished in 3 years. The time for different works has been allocated as follows:
Finishing 3 months
Landscaping 3 months
Conclusion
“The reconstruction of Dharahara” is a 3-year project where we plan to preserve the originality
of the building with a modern touch. We plan on making this historical monument grander than
before staying within a reasonable budget without compromising the quality of materials being
used.
