- The first great English humorist and realist.
- Born into a well-to-do wine merchant of London
1. THE CANTERBURY TALES
- Planned: 120 tales
- Completed: 24 tales
- (22 tales and 2 fragments)
- 29 pilgrims; each pilgrim would tell 2 stories on the way
to Canterbury and 2 more on the way back.
 But why go to Canterbury?
- Religion played an important part in medieval life.
2. WILLIAM SHAKEPEARE ( 1564 -1616)
- Wrote 38 plays
- 10 tragedies
- Wrote comedies, tragedies, histories, and romances (not
what you think)
- Also wrote 154 sonnets and several narrative poems all
dedicated to Sir Henry Wriothesley
- He was an actor, writer, director, and business man.
- Became known for his imaginative use of language and
timelessness

o Hamlet feels a responsibility to avenge his father’s
murder by his uncle Claudius, but Claudius is now the
king and thus well protected.
o Moreover, Hamlet struggles with his doubts about
whether he can trust the ghost and whether killing
Claudius is the appropriate thing to do.
3.2. RISING ACTION

- The ghost appears to Hamlet and tells Hamlet to


revenge his murder;
- Hamlet feigns madness to his intentions;
- Hamlet stages the mousetrap play;
- Hamlet passes up the opportunity to kill Claudius
while he is praying.
3.3. CLIMAX
- When Hamlet stabs Polonius, he commits himself to
overtly violent action and brings himself into
unavoidable conflict with the king.
- Another possible climax comes at the end of the
play when Hamlet resolves to commit himself fully
to violent revenge.
3.4. FALLING ACTION
- Hamlet is sent to England to be killed;
- Hamlet returns to Denmark and confronts Laertes at
Ophelia’s funeral; the fencing match;
