CA Lesson 1 Describing Rotational Motion Student

This document describes rotational motion and defines key angular terms like angular displacement, angular velocity, and angular acceleration. It explains that angular displacement is a measure of the angle of rotation, angular velocity is the rate of angular displacement over time, and angular acceleration is the rate of change of angular velocity over time. The document also relates linear and angular quantities and provides equations to convert between them when the distance from the axis of rotation is known.

Review Vocabulary

displacement: a change in position having both

magnitude and direction; is equal to the final
position minus the initial position
Angular Displacement

• A fraction of one
revolution can be
measured in degrees
or radians.
1
• A degree is of a
360
revolution.
• The radian is defined
1
as of a revolution.

Angular Displacement

• As an object rotates, the change in

the angle is called angular
displacement.
• The Greek letter theta, θ, is used to
represent the angle of revolution.
• The counterclockwise rotation is
designated as positive, while
clockwise is negative.
• For rotation through an angle, θ, a
point at a distance r from the
center moves a distance given by x = r θ.
Angular Velocity

• The angular velocity of an object is

angular displacement divided by the
time required to make the displacement.
• The angular velocity of an object is
given by: Δθ
ω 
Δt
• Angular velocity is measured in
rad/s.
• For an object rotating at an angular
velocity ω, a point at a distance r from
the center has a linear velocity given by v = r ω.
Angular Acceleration

• Angular acceleration is defined as the change in

angular velocity divided by the time required to
make that change.
• Angular acceleration is represented by the Greek
letter alpha, α, and can be written as the
following equation:

Δω
α 
Δt
Angular Acceleration

• Angular acceleration is measured in rad/s2.

• The linear acceleration of a point at a
distance (r) from the axis of an object with
angular acceleration (α) is given by a = rα.
• Angular frequency is the number of complete
revolutions made by the object in 1 s. It is
given by the equation:
𝜔
𝑓=
2𝜋
