SIMPLE TENSES OF VERBS


 Simple Present Tense
The simple present tense of verb may express the following:
a. to show that happens regularly or at all time ( Habitual action)
Alice wears earrings to school.
Good boys and girls wake up early every day to go to school.
b. for permanent or long-lasting situations ( Permanent condition)
The masses in our church start at 6:00 a.m.
Former President Fidel Ramos is a native of Pangasinan.
c. When expressing facts or statements that are always true (General truth)
Religion plays a big part in the lives of Filipinos.
The moon revolves around the earth.
d. When talking about feelings or stating opinions ( Opinion)
Liza likes gong to the chapel in the morning.
Girls talk more often than boys

Some time expressions we use for this tense are every day, every month, every year, daily, regularly,
sometimes, always, usually, and others.
How do we form the simple present tense of verb?
1. S-form: add –s or –es to the base form
used with singular subject
ex. The child plays quietly in his room.
Alex teaches his sister how to paint.
2. Base form: used with a plural subject, and the pronouns I and you
I enjoy cooking. They work in the bank.
We live in New York. Cows eat grass.
You dance with the music. The children play basketball in the yard.

The other verb forms in the simple present tense are as follows:
Base Forms Use/Function Example
be is with singular My sister is healthy.
am subject I am healthy.
are with the pronoun I My brothers and sisters are
with plural subject healthy.
and you
have have with plural subject The boys have a game today.
has with singular The boy has a game today.
subject

Note:
The singular form of the verb is used with the subjects referring to period of time, an amount of
money, measurement or distance.
Fifty pesos is spent on the sandwich and mango shake
Thirty minutes is spent for jogging around the campus.
One hundred thousand square meters is the estimated area of that forest.
Practice Task 1
Fill in the blank with the correct simple present tense form of verb in the parentheses.

 Simple Past Tense
- Verbs in the simple past tense express actions done in the past and conditions that take place in
the past.
- Time expressions used in this tense are yesterday, last night, before, long ago, last month, last
week, etc.
- Regular verbs form their past tense by adding –d or –ed. If the verb ends with y, change y to i and
add -ed. Examples: decide-decided; open-opened; carry-carried
- Irregular verbs is formed by changing the spelling of the verbs. Example: freeze-froze, pay-paid

 Simple Future Tense


- shows an action, a condition, and a state of being in the future time
- it is formed with the use of will or shall with the base form of the verb
- time expressions used with this tense are tomorrow, soon, later, tonight, a few hours from now,
next time, next week, next year, in a while and others

Practice Task 1
Write the simple future tense of the verbs in parentheses to complete the sentences.

3. My family and I left Manila and recently moved to Naga. I need to transfer school that’s why next
