SECTION 1. CABLE PLANT DESIGN GUIDELINES

BACKGROUND
The following proposal is based on the need to put up a data cabling system for data at the proposed offices in Kericho within James Finlay (K) Ltd complex. Houston Technologies understands this to be a critical component of the office complex, which requires the highest standards in design, product quality and implementation. The proposed network should be flexible enough to allow for future expansion to incorporate new work areas without any disruption of communication services. HOUSTON TECHNOLOGIES LTD understands, designs and builds future-proof networks based on the most stringent international standards to meet the above objectives.

SCOPE OF THE WORK

Under the terms of the following proposal Houston Technologies Ltd. Shall undertake the following tasks; (i) Supply all the materials specified in the Bill of quantities (ii) Implement the cabling system (iii) Document the installation (iv) Test and commission the network (v) Warranty support and maintenance of the network components subject to the terms of supply and installation

CABLING STANDARDS
All materials and installation practice for the cable plant shall conform to the following international standards guidelines; (i) ISO/IEC 11801 or EIA/TIA 568B or EN50173 regarding cabling (ii) EIA/TIA 569 pertaining to pathways and trunking (iii) EIA/TIA 606 with labelling and documentation standards (iv) EIA/TIA 607 about grounding (v) ANSI/TIA/EIA TSB67 (Transmission Performance Specifications for field testing of UTP Cabling Systems). (vi) EIA/TIA TSB 36 about cables (v) TIA/EIA TSB40-A regarding connectors performance

SECTION 3 NETWORK COMPONENTS

In the following section, we describe the function and specifications for all materials and components that we intend to use for the network implementation. The structured network shall be built around Category 5e compliant network products. Houston Technologies Ltd is certified to install for Alcatel, BrandRex, Krone and Siemon Cabling Systems. In this proposal, cabling components from Alcatel, Krone and Siemon shall be used. Switches Switches are the active parts of the proposed network. In this installation, we propose use of a Cisco switch for optimal performance. We propose to deploy a Cisco 2950C switch for fibre connectivity which shall be rack-mountable. Patch Panels, Data Modules and Telephone Termination Blocks Data Modules These will be used within the Floor Distribution area to provide fields for the interconnection of the media running between these areas. They are at the heart of the structured cabling system, allowing easy and quick re-configuration of the physical wiring network. They will be used to interconnect the switch and the Telecommunication Outlets in the work areas. Houston Technologies shall use Siemon Modules to provide patch fields for all horizontal cables, the hub and the telephone system. These modules are certified to operate above 350mhz which is far above the performance specifications of a Category 5 link. Krone 10-pair telephone modules shall be used to provide jumper fields for all telephone services links (from the PABX and Telcom). Together with the Highband Patch fields, the Krone 10-pair modules shall form the Main Distribution Frame (MDF). Telephone Services Sub-System Houston Technologies shall install a telephone services sub-system to facilitate (i) Entry point for Telcom Kenya telephone lines and the link to the MDF. (ii) Provision of a Telecommunications Earth for the network installation.

Telecommunication Outlets (Data points) Houston Technologies will use Krone dual-outlet. Telecommunication Outlets comprising RJ-45 jacks with silver-plated IDC contacts and gold plated RJ-45 contacts, UK style white face plate with transparent label window mounted on a standard back box. The lead frame technology of these products exceeds Cat.5e electrical transmission performance requirements of ANSI/TIA/EIA 568B, ISO/IEC 11801, and EN50173 standards. 11801

Patch Cords and Horizontal Cables

Patch cords provide easily changeable cross-connections between patch panels and other equipment in the wiring closet and between telecommunication outlets and terminal equipment in the work area. Use of patch cords allow for quick and convenient network reconfiguration with minimal downtime and no special tools without disturbing building wiring or closet equipment. Factory-prepared Category 5e compliant patch cords shall be used for cross connection of copper segments. 1.5m patch cords will be used at the MDF. 3m patch cords shall be supplied for the work areas. We shall also supply several Highband-RJ45 patch cords for the system administrator's use during system maintenance and to facilitate relocations. All horizontal cables must be certified to meet UTP Category 5e performance specifications of ISO/TIA 11801 international standard. The cable shall be colour-coded, 100 Ohm impedance and of solid 24 wire gauge.

Cord Organizers
Cord organizers shall be used in the Telecommunication Closets to provide an orderly routing and arrangement of patch/equipment cables for ease of management and administration.

Telecommunication Closets (Administration Cabinets)

These shall consist of standard 19-inch equipment racks enclosed in ventilated cabinets. Appropriate cabinets shall be used to house active components of the network.

SECTION 4.

TESTING AND CERTIFICATION

Houston Technologies will carry out the following tests on the cable plant for purposes of certification. Tests shall be carried out on each and every link within the cable plant. The installation shall be done according to the ISO/IEC 11801 and TIA/EIA 568B specifications. Each link shall be tested using a Mocrotest Pentascanner Plus tester and a certification report generated. Tests shall be in accordance with the following link specification model.
