Chart Work - Assignment 2

This document contains 5 navigation chart assignments with questions regarding position lines, bearings, transits, running fixes, and celestial position lines. The questions involve concepts like reciprocal bearings, vertical sextant angles, gyro compass errors, relative bearings, raising and dipping of lights, and allowing for current. Sample answers are provided for each question's calculated ship position.

TCN (Chart Work) Assignment 2

CHART NO. B. A. 5048 (Ireland South Coast)

Notes:
(a) Position of landmarks are approximate and are for easy identification only.
(b) Deviation Card 2, Variation 50W, HE 12m, Ship’s speed 12 knots if needed to solve the question and not
mentioned in the question.
(c) Luminous range diagram may be used if required.
(d) The answers may not match exactly due to variable errors of plotting tools.

1. Hook Head Light House (52°07.4’N, 006°55.8’W) and Conningbeg Light Vessel (52°03’N, 006°39’W)
were on reciprocal bearings and Vertical Sextant Angle of Hook Head Light House was 0°16’, I.E. 1.6’
off the arc and sea level 2.5m below MHWS. Find the ship’s position.
From this position, plot safe courses on chart to join the East bound lane of St. Goerge’s Channel TSS.
Indicate the true course and distance for each leg on chart with course alteration point.
(Concept – Reciprocal bearing PL, Vertical Sextant Angle, Passage Planning)
(Answer – Position – 52°05.1’ N 006°48.2’ W)

2. Following bearings were obtained on a vessel at anchor: Old Head of Kinsale Light – 278° (Gyro),
Roche’s Point Light – 339° (Gyro) and Ballycotton Island Light – 024° (Gyro). Find the vessel’s anchor
position and the error of the gyro compass.
From the above position find the Gyro Course to steer to have Hook Head Light (52°07.4’N,
006°55.8’W) 30° on port bow when 12 miles off.
(Concept – Horizontal Angle, Obtaining Gyro Error, Having a light on certain angle on the bow without
current)
(Answer – Anchor Position – 51°36.4’ N 008°05.2’ W, Gyro Error 8° High, CTS 069° (G))

3. At 2000 hours Mine Head (51°59.5’N, 007°35.0’W) and Ballyna Courty (52°04.6’N, 007°33.2’W) Lights
were in transit. After half an hour of steaming Mine Head Light was abeam. Vessel was steering a
course of 030° (T). If current was setting Southerly at 2 knots find the position and time when Ballyna
Courty Light will be four points on her port bow.
(Concept – Transit Bearing, Relative Bearings, Running Fix with current)
(Answer – Position – 51°59.7’ N 007°31’ W, Time 2038)
4. Tusker Rock Light (52°12’N, 006°18’W) was raised at a distance of 3.6 miles off and 30 minutes later it
was observed to dip at a distance of 3.6 miles off due to poor visibility. In this interval the vessel
steered a course of 235° (T), current setting 330° (T) x 2 knots. Determine the position of the vessel at
the time of raising and dipping of light.
(Concept – Position Circles by Raising/Dipping of lights, Transferring Position Circle, allowing for
current)
(Answer – Initial Position – 52°11.6’ N 006°06.4’ W, Final Position – 52°09.0’ N 006°15.2’ W)

5. At 2000 hours in D.R. position 51°41’N, 007°15’W, a star sight gave an intercept of 1.3 miles towards
with an azimuth of 142° (T) on a course of 288° (T). The visibility reduced to 5 miles thereafter, Bally
Cotton Island Light (51°50’N, 007°59’W) was first sighted at 2130 hours. Find the vessel’s position at
2130 hours (HE to be 15 meters in this question, set and rate being 000° (T), 2 knots).
(Concept – Celestial PL, Position Circles by First Sighting, Transferring PL, allowing for current)
(Answer – 2130 Position – 51°50.4’ N 007°38.4’ W)
