1. An electrochemical cell converts chemical energy to electrical energy 1. Calculate the e.m.f for each of the following cells

Daniel cell a) Sn2+/Sn and Mg2+/Mg

Sn2+ + 2e → Sn E = - 0.14 V
Mg2+ + 2e → Mg E = - 2.37 V

Zn2+ + 2e → Zn E0 = -0.76V
Cu2+ + 2e → Cu E0 = + 0.34V b) Zn2+/Zn and Pb2+/Pb
1. The SEP for zinc (-0.76V) is more negative than Copper (+0.34V) and thus Zinc is Zn2+ + 2e → Zn E = - 0.76V
anode (undergoes oxidation reaction and form negative terminal) Pb2+ + 2e → Pb E = - 0.13 V
Zn (s) → Zn2+ (aq) + 2e

2. The SEP for Copper (+0.34V) is more positive than zinc and thus copper is cathode
(undergoes reduction reaction and form positive terminal)
Cu2+ (aq) + 2e → Cu (s)

Anode: Zn (s) → Zn2+ (aq) + 2e


Cathode: Cu2+ (aq) + 2e → Cu (s)

Overall: Zn (s) + Cu2+ (aq) → Zn2+ (aq) + Cu (s)


c) Fe3+ / Fe2+ and Pb4+ / Pb2+

Fe3+ + e → Fe2+ E  = + 0.77 V


3. The electromotive force (e.m.f) of this cell is
Pb4+ + 2e → Pb2+ E  = + 1.69 V
E0 = E0cathode - E0anode
= (+ 0.34) – (-0.76)
= + 1.10 V
