province of Benguet was developed to be a cultural PERSONNEL
melting pot, where it became a tourist destination,
educational magnet and sprawling center for
economic activities of the North. The city
administration, then governed by Americans, deemed
it needed to organize a fire department that would
address fire related incidents. The very first city
firemen were the American soldiers, who in turn
recruited and trained Filipino volunteers to augment
them. The first fire house, established at Camp John
Hay, used to be storage for American Military
supplies. Gradually, the volunteers enhanced their
firefighting and rescue skills and later became part of
the city’s first fulltime fire squad.
On June 28, 1934, the City Council of Baguio passed *PHOTO OF FIRST FIRE WAGON IF
and approved ordinance No. 500, wherein among the AVAILABLE
salient features of the ordinance is the utilization of * FIRST FIRE PERSONNEL IN

the police force as the City Fire Department along *OTHER PHOTOS OF FIRST/OLD FS

Also included among others, is the enforced
construction of fire walls, fire escapes, and fire
hydrants especially to newly constructed buildings.
Also featured in the said ordinance, are measures for
the prevention of grass and forests fires, the approval
of the city engineer on the construction of the
gasoline pump station and a fee to be collected for
every permit issued. All of which are precedent to the
modern Fire Code of the Philippines.

station established not only in the province but also in
the Cordillera Region. Later in the year 1978, it was
transferred to No. 01 Corner Kayang St. and Abanao
St. where the current Baguio City Fire Station is
situated today. Now, under the leadership of Acting
Provincial Fire Director CINSP MARISOL H ODIVER,
the province of Benguet has a total of 12 fire stations
with 13 Fire Trucks and 225 personnel assigned in
the province, while Baguio City Fire Station, under
the leadership of City Fire Director SUPT NESTOR C
GORIO has a total of 1 fire station, 3 sub stations, 8
