Music theater has evolved over centuries by adopting different musical styles. In the late 19th century, opera began to be sung in English with works like The Beggar's Opera, increasing its popularity. Broadway musicals emerged in the mid-1800s and incorporated spoken dialogue between songs. Modern musicals continue adopting popular music styles and telling compelling stories through music. The Philippines has developed its own tradition of opera, influenced by Spanish zarzuelas, with notable works like Sandugong Panaguinip and operas based on novels by Jose Rizal.
