Assignment 1

This document contains an individual assignment for 5th year electrical power students at Bahir Dar University in Ethiopia. It includes 5 problems related to power system planning and operation. The first problem involves calculating the average load, load factor, reserve capacity, and plant capacity factor for a 1MW generation station supplying a town with varying hourly demands. The second problem involves calculating the annual load factor, annual plant capacity factor, and reserve capacity for a 3MW base load power plant. The third problem involves determining the standby capacity and excess power for a run-of-river hydroelectric plant or one with a reservoir. The fourth problem involves forecasting the peak load after 3 years for the Bahir Dar substation given an initial peak load

Power System Planning and Operation
Individual assignment one for 5th year Electrical power students (Regular)

1. 1MW generation station supplied, a town which has the following demands:

From To Demand in kW
Midnight 5am 300
5am 6pm No-load
6pm 7pm 900
7pm 9pm 100
9pm Midnight 200
Find:

a) Average load
b) Load factor
c) Reserve capacity
d) Plant capacity factor
2. A base load power having a capacity of 3MW has been desired to supply poly.
Find:
a) Annual load factors? Write your reflection on this load factor?
b) Annual plant capacity factor? If the annual base load station output is 10*105Kwh.
c) Reserve capacity?
3. A factory is located near a water fall where the usable head for power generation is 25 m.
The factory requires continuous power of 800 kW throughout the year. The river flows in
a year are 20m3/sec, 12m3/sec, 3m3/sec for 4, 2 and 6 months respectively.
(a) If the site is developed as a run-of-river type of plant, determine the standby capacity
to be provided. Assume that overall efficiency of the plant is 90%.
(b) If a reservoir is arranged, will any standby unit be necessary? What will be the excess
power available?
4. Assume the peak load on Bahir Dar substation is 50MW and the annual growth rate is
5%.
a) What will be the peak load after 3 solid years? Write your insight on this forecast?

12 noon 5 pm 800
5 pm 6 pm 5000
6 pm 7 pm No-load
7 pm midnight 4000

Region 2
From To Demand (kW)
midnight 8 am 800
8 am 1 pm 5000
1 pm 2 pm 800
2 pm 5 pm 5000
5 pm midnight 800
