1. INTRODUCTION

Apple is one of the world's largest and most influential technology companies.
Founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, Apple has grown
to become a household name and a major player in the technology industry. The
company is best known for its line of personal computers, laptops, and mobile devices
such as the iPhone and iPad. Apple is also known for its software, such as the macOS
and iOS operating systems, and the iTunes media player.

iOS is an operating system that runs on all of the company’s mobile products,
iPhone and Ipad. It has been a major competitor in the operating systems market since
its first appearance in 2007. Due to its attractive design and easy-to-use interface, iOS
has gained a lot of popularity among both individuals and companies. As of the fourth
quarter of 2022, Apple has managed to generate revenue of 42.63 billion US dollars just
from iPhone sales. Apple has continuously made updates and improvements to the
operating system to ensure it remains up-to-date and competitive in the rapidly changing
technology industry.

In this report, we will delve into the history of iOS, from its early days to the
current version, and examine the different features that have been added throughout the
updates. We will also evaluate both the benefits and drawbacks of using iOS. Finally, we
will compare iOS to Windows, an operating system created by Microsoft.

2. HISTORY

The iOS has proven itself to be a massive competitor to other operating systems,
especially in the smartphone market with its long history since the first release in 2007.
The first version of iOS, back when it was first referred to as iPhone OS from version
1-3. It was first released on 29th June 2007, when it came pre-installed with the first
iteration of iPhone, revealed by the late Steve Jobs. This initial version of the operating
system was built on a modified version of Mac OS X and was designed to provide a
more user-friendly experience than other mobile operating systems of the time.

The first version of iOS was quite basic, lacking many features that are now
considered standard on mobile devices. However, Apple quickly began to add new
features and improvements to the operating system.

The following year, Apple released iOS 2 on 11th July 2008, which added several
new features, including a Maps application, the App Store, and support for push
notifications. It also included support for the first-generation iPod Touch, which allowed
users to access the App Store without an iPhone. The release of the App Store was a
major turning point for the mobile industry, as it allowed developers to create and
distribute apps on a large scale.

 With the release of iOS 3 on 17th June 2009, Apple introduced several new
features such as cut, copy, and paste, MMS support, and Spotlight Search. Additionally,
the company also introduced the ability to tether an iPhone to a computer, allowing users
to use their iPhone as a modem to connect to the internet.

In 2010, iOS 4 was released on 22nd June 2010, which introduced a number of
new features such as multitasking, the ability to create folders, and the introduction of
the retina display. Additionally, Apple also introduced Game Center, which allowed users
to play games with friends, and iBooks, which allowed users to purchase and read books
on their devices. It also included support for the iPad and the ability to AirPlay content
from an iOS device to an Apple TV.

The following year, on 12th October 2011, Apple released iOS 5, which featured
the introduction of the Notification Center, iMessage, and iCloud. It also included
improvements to the App Store, as well as the ability to wirelessly sync content between
iOS devices. Apple also introduced Siri, a personal assistant AI which allowed users to
interact with their devices using voice commands. This was a major step forward in the
field of artificial intelligence and has since become an integral part of many mobile
devices. Additionally, Apple also introduced the ability to take photos using the volume
buttons, and the ability to shoot and edit HD video.

On 19th September 2012, iOS 6 was released, which introduced a number of

new features such as Apple Maps, which replaced Google Maps as the default mapping
application, and Passbook, which allowed users to store and manage their tickets,
coupons, and other types of passes. Additionally, Apple also introduced the ability to
make Facetime calls over cellular networks, and the ability to share photos and videos
via iCloud.

iOS 7 was released on 18th September 2013, which introduced a major redesign
of the operating system. The new design was flatter, with a focus on simplicity, and was
designed to be more intuitive and easy to use. Additionally, Apple also introduced the
Control Center, which made it easier for users to access common settings and features,
as well as improved performance, and the ability to use Bluetooth accessories.

The following year, iOS 8 was released on 17th September 2014, which
introduced a number of new features such as the ability to make phone calls and send
text messages from a Mac or iPad, and the ability to use third-party keyboards.
Additionally, Apple also introduced the ability to use Touch ID to make purchases from
the App Store and iTunes Store, and the ability to use the Health app to track health and
fitness data. It also included the introduction of iCloud Drive, which allowed users to
store and sync their content across multiple devices.

On 16th September 2015, iOS 9 was released, which introduced a number of

new features such as the ability to use Siri to make suggestions and perform tasks, and

the ability to use the News app to read news articles. Additionally, Apple also introduced
the ability to use the Wallet app to store and use credit and debit cards, and the ability to
use the Notes app to create and edit notes.

In 2016, iOS 10 was released, which introduced a number of new features such
as the ability to use Siri to control third-party apps, and the ability to use the Music app to
create and edit playlists. Additionally, Apple also introduced the ability to use the Home
app to control home automation devices, and the ability to use the Maps app to navigate
using public transportation.

In 2017, Apple released iOS 11, which introduced a number of new features such
as the ability to use the Dock to access frequently used apps and the ability to use the
App Switcher to switch between apps. Additionally, Apple also introduced the ability to
use the Files app to access and organize files, and the ability to use the Camera app to
take photos and videos in HEIF and HEVC formats.

In 2018, Apple released iOS 12, which focused on performance and stability
improvements. The company also introduced several new features such as the ability to
use the Screen Time app to monitor and limit device usage, and the ability to use the
Shortcuts app to automate tasks using Siri. Additionally, Apple also introduced the ability
to use the Measure app to measure real-world objects, and the ability to use the Memoji
app to create custom Animoji.

In 2019, Apple released iOS 13, which introduced a number of new features such
as the ability to use the Dark Mode to switch the operating system to a darker color
scheme, and the ability to use the Find My app to locate lost or stolen devices.
Additionally, Apple also introduced the ability to use the Sign in with Apple, which allows
users to sign in to apps and websites using their Apple ID, and the ability to use the
Photos app to edit and organize photos.

In 2020, Apple released iOS 14, which introduced a number of new features such
as a redesigned home screen, a new App Library, and the ability to use widgets on the
home screen. Additionally, Apple also introduced new privacy features such as the App
Privacy Report, which allows users to view the data that apps collect and the way they
use it.

In 2021, Apple released iOS 15, which focused on improving communication and
productivity features. The company introduced several new features such as the ability
to use the FaceTime app to make group calls with up to 32 people, and the ability to use
the Focus mode to silence notifications from specific apps and contacts. Additionally,
Apple also introduced the ability to use the Notifications Summary, which groups
together notifications from the same app, and the ability to use the Live Text, which
allows users to copy and paste text from images.

 3. FEATURES AND FUNCTION OF IOS

1. Siri
The speech assistant on Apple devices, Siri, is comparable to Alexa on Amazon,
Cortana on Microsoft, and Google Assistant on Google. The majority of Apple's products,
including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and HomePod, all have Siri built in.
you can ask siri all kinds of questions, from simple queries about the weather to more complex
questions about everything from sports scores to the number of calories in a food. Siri can also
enable or disable settings, find content, set alarms and reminders and so much more. Siri is
build in apple devices system to increase the productivity of working because of the easy
access to every single function in the phone

2. Application
Ios devices come with preinstalled apps develop by apple including mail, maps, tv,
music, facetime, wallet, health dan many more. Application are the most general form of
application software that can be installed on IOS. They are already downloaded from the official
catalog of the app store, where apps are subjected to security checks before being made
available to users.

3. Apple ecosystem
Apple ecosystem is not a product that being produced by apple but instead it’s a
user and lifestyle experience of using the apple product. This user-experience is a
process where you can synchronizing all the apple products devices and can be
working simultaneously which making the productivity of user increasing because of
simplicity of the data transfer can be made within apple product

4. IOS update
Every single year, apple will bring a big update for the IOS to make an
improvement from various functionality and also fixing bugs that appear from some of
their old or new devices. All the update that was bring is for increasing the productivity
of users and also to improve the performance of the devices whether for an old or new
release devices

5. User interface
The IOS user interface is based upon direct manipulation, using multi-touch
gestures such as swipe, tap, pinch and reverse pinch. IOS devices boot to the
homescreen, the primary navigation and information “hub” on IOS devices. IOS
homescreen are typically made up of app icons and widgets

Advantages

● Easy to use with simple interface even after version upgrade

The fact that iOS is so easy to use and works with every new version is a huge benefit.
Since its functions and apps continue to work as they should on subsequent handsets,
consumers of the iPhone actually consider this to be the platform's best feature. This
guarantees consistency of performance while minimizing interface design changes.

● Good use of Google maps lacking in other OS

Users of Apple phones can leverage all of Google Maps advantages over other
platforms to navigate. Other platform users frequently voice their displeasure at not
being able to take advantage of all Google Maps' features, but iOS users never do.

● Document-friendly as Office365 apps allows editing/viewing of docs

iOS facilitates the operation of the company's Office365 app, a collection of cloud-based
productivity tools that allow users to create and share data, manage data, site pages,
and do a lot more things that can be done with PCs. With the help of these apps, iOS
users may collaborate in real-time while smartly managing business work in Word and
Excel. With all of this, users can conveniently keep crucial documents on their iPhones
and iPads and read or modify them wherever they are.

● Multitasking like listening to music & typing docs possible

One of the main advantages that the iOS offers over other operating systems is the
ability to multitask. Music can be played uninterruptedly while those who want to use
their iPhones or iPads for work do so. It is similar to using a smartphone while sitting in
an office and working in a stimulating setting, but without making any compromises.

 ● Efficient Battery use with less heat generation

Big-time iPhone users will attest to the fact that these gadgets produce less heat even
when in use for extended periods of time. This is because batteries for iPhones are
known to be far more energy-efficient and to produce less heat than batteries for other
operating systems. Many users favor the operating system and its exclusive hardware
only because it allows them to play games for extended periods of time without
experiencing heating problems.

● Impeccable security makes phone free of malicious codes & viruses

Due to the platform's strong security procedures, Apple phones and other gadgets are
easy to use. As programmes and features are tested for the specific platform before
being loaded for usage, devices running on this platform have zero danger of getting
viruses or other destructive codes. The technology supports both facial detection and
fingerprint sensors, providing two layers of protection.

Disadvantages

● Same icons with same look on home screen even after upgrades

The platform gives very little to look forward to in terms of trendy designs or
improvements, with little difference in user interface and design. Even when customers
purchase higher versions with the same icons as previously, the home screen stays the
same. Those seeking a fresh new look for the platform must be satisfied with its current
appearance.

● Too simple & doesn’t support computer work as in other OS

When utilizing an iPhone or iPad, the platform's ability to provide a computer-like

experience is limited. iOS provides considerably easier performance options when
compared to other platforms.

● No widget support for iOS apps that are also costly

iOS does not support any additional widgets to expand the functionalities of the apps it
supports; it only supports apps designed exclusively for the platform. Additionally,
because of all the limitations, iOS apps must adhere to a number of requirements,
which inevitably drives up the price for the end customer.

There is a restriction when it comes to using iOS-powered devices because the platform
only works with devices created by the firm. Even if you as a user like the extra function
that any other device outside the firm offers, you are unable to utilize it because iOS
only works with hardware that comes from the Apple factory.

● App sizes are usually too big consuming too much space

Apps designed for iOS become incredibly large and take up a lot of storage space on
the device due to the platform's unique capabilities and characteristics. On this platform,
apps that are many gigabytes in size must make room for those who want to play
games on their device.
