MODULE 8-9
Sexual Harassment and Paraphilias

Activity 1: Directions: Read the following statements and choose from the options inside the
parenthesis (strongly agree/ agree/ disagree/ strongly disagree) your response that best supports
your opinion.

strongly disagree 1. Girls sexually harass girls, and boys sexually harass boys.
agree 2. Even though they dislike it, friends allow sexual harassment to happen
to their friends.
strongly disagree 3. Teachers and educational staff ignore sexual harassment and allow it to
go on in school.
strongly disagree 4. Girls who dress in sexy clothing are asking for attention and to be
harassed.
agree 5. Flirting is sexual harassment.
strongly disagree 6. Sexual harassment does not happen at home.
strongly agree 7. Sexual harassment can be prevented.
strongly agree 8. A student who files an official complaint against a harasser should
expect to be taunted for being a tattle-tale.
strongly disagree 9. Younger children are not capable of sexual harassment.
agree 10. Women sexually harass men and get away with it easier than men
sexually harassing women.
strongly agree 11. Boys cannot be sexually harassed.
agree 12. In most cases of sexual harassment, males harass females.
strongly agree 13. Offensive graffiti on the bathroom wall is not sexual harassment.
agree 14. Little children as young as five or six years old can be harassers.
agree 15. Reporting sexual harassment gets positive results.
agree 16. All harassment is intentional.
strongly agree 17. Harassment can be flattering.
strongly disagree 18. Sexual harassment is a fact of life.

Activity 2:
TRUE OR FALSE Instructions: Write “true” if the statement is correct and “false” if it is
incorrect. Provide a brief explanation why it is TRUE/ FALSE based on your answer.

1. Quid pro quo is a form of sexual harassment that includes offensive verbal, visual and/or
physical contact that creates a hostile work environment.
- This is false, because Quid pro quo is a type of harassment that occurs when a teacher
(or school employee) stipulates that your grade will be based on whether you submit
to unwanted sexual conduct. On the other hand, sexual harassment that includes
offensive verbal, visual, and/or physical contact that creates a hostile work
environment is called "Hostile Environment Sexual Harassment."
2. The best way to stop sexual harassment is to ignore it and it will go away.
- False
- Generally, simply ignoring sexual harassment will not stop it. Ignoring such behavior
may be taken as a sign of encouragement or tacit consent. Many report that when they
directly tell the harasser to stop, the harassment often, but not always, ends.
3. People who sexually harass others are usually motivated by attractions and desire.
1. False, because sexual harassment is about power, not sex. A harasser’s actions are
often meant to humiliate or intimidate the victim.
4. Sexual harassment is really just a form of teasing and it is not against the law.
2. This is false, because sexual harassment is an expression of hostility and aggression.
It is an abuse of power using sexual behavior as the vehicle, and it is against the law.
5. If a girl wears a revealing clothing she cannot then complain about being sexually
harassed.
3. This is false, because girls can wear whatever clothes they feel comfortable wearing.
It is not their fault to be harassed, and they have the right to complain about being
sexually harassed. The harasser is always responsible for having committed the
harassment regardless of an individual's appearance, behavior, judgement, or previous
actions. You cannot use the way a person dresses as an excuse for harassing them.
Furthermore, professional dress codes, if they exist, should be enforced for both
sexes.

Activity 3: Instructions: List down 5 strategies on how to address sexual harassment in

work, education, or training environment.

1. Get involved with a leadership or other student group that works on sexual harassment
issues.
2. Get informed about your school and workplace sexual harassment policies to know who
to contact.
3. Support people who are facing this problem and encourage them to resist and take action.
4. Report harassment incidents.
5. Keep a record of any incidents of harassment.

Assessment

Activity 1: Instructions: Analyze the given scenario and tell whether the following cases are
examples of sexual harassment. Identify what type of sexual harassment is being described in
each statement and provide a brief explanation of your answer.

Case Scenario 1

Alexander frequently tells off-color jokes during team meetings. Lilia is very offended. She
doesn’t think Alexander’s jokes are so funny. Alexander’s behavior is not sexual in fun, and he
does not intend to sexually harass anyone.
A. Even if Alexander’s jokes were not meant to be offensive or he himself did not intend to
sexually harass anyone, the jokes may possess a sexually crass nature, which does offend
others in the workplace. This scenario is an example of hostile environment sexual
harassment because off-color jokes are a verbal form of harassment that deals with topics
that may be considered vulgar and are acts concerned with sex. Alexander should limit
his jokes and be cautious of what he says in the workplace.

Case Scenario 2

Suzanna and Haik enjoy a great a working relationship and just recently have started dating.
They can’t seem to get enough of each other. They take breaks and lunch together and are often
seen flirting at the copy machine. They are clearly infatuated with each other. Romance has no
place at work. This couple’s behavior is clearly sexual harassment.

B. Workplace romance should be avoided because it can lead to harassment. However,

because Suzanna and Haik have begun dating, their relationship is mutual, and their
behavior is not sexual harassment unless one of them is an unwilling participant. It is,
however, inappropriate to flirt at work.

Case Scenario 3

Anton is a Vice President of Marketing at EZ Interactive Company and he has hired Rosa, just
out of graduate school, as his assistant. Sometime after Rosa started working at the company,
Anton tells her that the only way she can keep her job at EZ Interactive is by having sex with
him. Rosa refuses and is fired a few months later for poor job performance. Rosa is the target of
sexual harassment.

C. Rosa's boss is clearly engaging in quid pro quo sexual harassment by encouraging her to
sleep with him in order to keep her job, even if it is not explicitly stated. Since she was
fired for refusing his advances, which is strictly prohibited in the United States.
Assignment:

1. What are the barriers to women's empowerment?

- Women face numerous barriers in both the private and public spheres, including job-
type and sector discrimination, restrictions on women's freedom and mobility,
restrictions on property and inheritance rights, a lack of access to financial services,
and inadequate legal protection from violence.

2. In what ways are women contributing to the development of society?

- Women contribute to societal development in a variety of ways. They are society's
caretakers, farmers, educators, and entrepreneurs. Women are the primary caretakers
for children and the elderly in every country in the world. They play an important role
in helping their households and communities achieve food and nutrition security,
generate income, and improve their livelihoods. They also contribute to education by
assisting in the improvement and transition of pre-literates to literates. It is usually the
mother who encourages both boys and girls to attend and stay in school.
