PhD Fellowship in
Trustworthy Machine Learning

Job Offer
Topics: The “BCAM Severo Ochoa Strategic Lab on Trustworthy
Machine Learning” is held together with Dr Novi
Quadrianto at the University of Sussex. This Joint Lab
aims to promote research collaborations in topics such
as algorithmic fairness under uncertainty in a static
setting, and transparency in algorithmic fairness, and
thus reinforce existing research areas and generate
synergies.
PIs in charge: BCAM: Prof Jose Antonio Lozano
University of Sussex: Dr Novi Quadrianto, ERC Starting
Grant (2020-2025): BayesianGDPR ("Bayesian Models
and Algorithms for Fairness and Transparency").
Salary and conditions: The gross annual salary of the Fellowship will be
18.000 €.

It will then be on your own responsibility to make your


yearly income declaration at the Bizkaia Treasury
Agency.
There is a moving allowance for those researchers that
come from a research institution outside the Basque
Country up from EUR 500 to EUR 1.000 gross.

Free access to the Public Health System in Spain is


provided to all employees.

Scientific Profile Requested


Requirements: • Promising young researchers.
• An MSc. Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics
or Physics (or relevant disciplines).
Skills and track-record: • Ability to effectively communicate and present
research ideas.

• Previous experience in research projects is highly


desirable.
• High level of spoken and written English.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Fluency in spoken and written English.
Scientific Profile: The preferred candidate will have:
• Demonstrated knowledge in machine learning
techniques and mathematics
• Knowledge in algorithmic fairness is desired.

• Good programming skills in R, Python and/or C/C++.


• Interest and disposition to work in interdisciplinary
groups.

Evaluation: Based on the provided application documents of each
candidate, the evaluation committee will evaluate
qualitatively: the adaption of the previous training and
career to the profile offered, the recommendation letters,
the main results achieved (papers, proceedings, etc.),
the statement of past and proposed future research and
other merits; taking in account the alignment of these
items to the topic offered.

Incorporation: Summer 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The BCAM postdoctoral contract will start when the


selected candidate has finished the PhD, i.e. after
dissertation defence.
