GENERAL PROBLEM
On Intelligence
SPECIFIC PROBLEM
To access the current level of intellectual functioning of the subject
with help of Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) developed by John C. Raven in
1936.
BASIC CONCEPT
PRELIMINARIES
1. Initials of the Participant – S.S
2. Age of the Participant – 22 years
3. Sex of the Participant – Female
4. Education Qualification – Graduate
5. Date of test administration – 02.11.2022
MATERIALS REQUIRED
METHODOLOGY
The participant must select the correct missing number from the answer options
given. Each test is divided into several task groups, and the "progressive" nature of
the test arises from the gradual increase in the difficulty of intra-sentence and inter-
sentence problems. Each series contains tasks that increase in difficulty. In this way,
we will be able to measure level of intellectual development of the participant.
- Procedure
The participant was seated comfortably. Rapport was established. The details of the
subject were recorded. It was ensured that the participant nis comfortable and has
free time (30-45 mins) to complete the test. The participant was briefed about the
intelligence test and was encouraged to ask questions if any. After that the
instructions for the test were given.
- Instructions
"A Standard’s Progressive Matrices Test is a test designed to measure your non-
verbal, abstract and cognitive functioning. In the test, you will be presented with
geometric designs, with one piece missing. Your job is to choose the right diagram,
from a set of given answers, that completes a pattern in the matrix that you have to
figure out. The questions and answers are all completely non-verbal. The test
consists of 60 items (5 series). Each series contains tasks of increasing difficulty.
There is no time limit."
- Scoring
The total score is the total number of matrices completed correctly. The Standard’s
Progressive Matrices (SPM), thus, produces a single raw score that can be converted
to a percentile based a normative data collected from various groups.
INTERPRETATION
According to American Psychological Association “intelligence is the ability to
derive information, learn from experience, adapt to the environment, understand,
and correctly utilize thought and reason.”
In the present study, data was collected from the participant and from the result table
it is observed that the participant’s percentile rank is 50 which lies between 25 th and
75th percentile and falls under Grade III. Therefore, the score indicates the participant
has average intelligence.
Average intelligence shows that the participant intelligence falls under IQ range of
90-109. The average IQ score is always 100, and the personal score tells the IQ
ranking compared to that. As 100 is the average score, the score tells the
participant his IQ score ranks.
