CATEGORY : MANDATORY
EFFECTIVITY : FORTHWITH
OBJECTIVE : TO PREVENT INADVERTENT MANUAL LOCKING OF
COCKPIT DOOR ON ATR
REFERENCES : NIL
APPLICABILITY : ATR FLEET
AFFECTED DEPARTMENT : ENGINEERING & FLIGHT OPERATIONS
VALID TILL : TILL WITHDRAWN OR SUSPENDED
DESCRIPTION :
There have been events of ATR cockpit door getting inadvertently mechanically locked from
inside when no one was occupying the flight deck. This has resulted in operational disruptions
and delays.
The root cause has been identified as keeping the manual lock bolt in between the CLOSE &
OPEN position (halfway extended). In case the cockpit door is closed with lock bolt in halfway
position, the lock bolt will tend to engage with the groove on the opposite side in the locked
position. This will cause locking of the cockpit door. Once the door is locked with the lock bolt, it
can then only be opened from the inside.
Therefore, the normal position of the cockpit door lock should be in the OPEN (retracted)
position when flight deck is unoccupied (as shown in the photograph in Appendix I).
1) Cockpit lock bolt should not be used unless required for any maintenance procedures.
2) The position of the lock bolt should be checked by AME when he enters the cockpit for
transit and pre-departure checks. It should be ensured that it is in the open (retracted)
position.
3) Post completion of the night halt checks, it must be ensured that the mechanical lock is in
the OPEN (retracted) position and the cockpit door electrical lock switch (121VU) is in the
OFF position.
