“A Sea of Emotions”

(Analyzing the Plot of the Story “Biag ni Lam-ang”)

Objectives:
 Distinguish the relationship of each character in the story.
 Read the story thoughtfully.
 Appreciate the concept of the story.
 Summarize the story.

Analyzing the Plot of a Story
PLOT – the series of interconnected events that make up a story.
A plot’s structure, or the way in which the events of a story are presented, may be chronological
or non-chronological.

• Chronological plot structure


(1) First establishes the setting and conflict in the story
(2) the rising action
(3) the climax (the part when the conflict is at its peak, thus creating the greatest tension)
(4) the falling action
(5) the denouement (the wrapping up of loose ends)
(6) the conclusion (the resolution of the conflict)

• Non-chronological plot structure


- Does not follow a time-based sequence
- One of the strategies used for this structure is flashback.

 Flashback – shows information about earlier events.


- The story may begin in the midst of the action and then later present the background to explain
the present events.
- It may happen more than once and in different parts of a story.

EXERCISE:
ACTIVITY 1 (Page 75-76): Answer the following questions about the epic poem “Biag ni Lam-ang.”

1. Who are the parents of Lam-ang?


2. Why was Lam-ang’s father not around when Lam-ang was born?
3. What are the characteristics of Lam-ang?
4. Why was Lam-ang considered extraordinary?
5. What did the women do to Lam-ang when he returned from his battle with the Igorots?

7. What did Ines do to the remains of Lam-ang?
8. If you were Lam-ang, would you also fight the Igorots? Explain your answer.
