S5 SUB-MATH EXAM
TIME: 2 HOURS 40 MINUTES

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
1. Attempt all the eight questions in section A and any four
questions from section B. All necessary calculations must be
done on the same page as the rest of the answers. No paper for
rough work.
2. Mathematical tables with a list of formulae and squared papers
are provided.
3. Silent, non-programmable scientific calculators may be used.

14. A train moves from rest at station A with a uniform acceleration of ams-2 for a
distance of 192m until it attains a maximum speed of 16ms-1. It maintains the
maximum speed for t seconds. It is then brought to rest at station B by a retardation
bms-2 in 12 seconds. If the distance between the stations A and B is 5km;
Find the:
i) Values of a, b and t;
ii) average speed of the train from station A to station B. (15 marks)
