CHAPTER l

PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

In our modern world, people have been dealing with waste management

and segregation, especially those in households, building and commercial

establishments. With reasons ranging from laziness, busy schedules and

insufficient time allotment. However, when these issues are left unchecked, it

might pose a threat to the peoples well-being and might endanger their health.

This is the problem most countries face right now. And if left unsolved, might lead

to a serious case of pollution and new problems will arise.

Waste management is the process of organizing or differentiating

garbage into specific groups. This process helps in reducing pollution, easing up

garbage collection and maintaining the cleanliness of the community. However,

some communities are short on manpower or the problem is to great to be solved

by just manpower. That is where robots go in. Robots are created to do

dangerous, impossible or extreme tasks humans along can’t solve. And the

researchers got the idea of creating a pick and place robot that can aid in regards

to this concern.

The researchers aim to create a pick and place robot which can pick up

specific objects (waste) and put them in a specific location or container. This way,

it can be done more easily, free from errors and will not require human
intervention. It can also replace workers in doing these jobs to increase cost

efficiency. And it can also be implemented in schools. Particularly, in Material

Recovery Facilities to aid in segregating and managing wastes.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the feasibility of using pick and place robots

for waste management. These specific questions that the researcher aims to

answer are the following:

1. How effective are pick and place robots if utilized for waste management?

2. How much error and cost will be saved if pick and place robots are used

instead of manpower?

3. Is there a significant difference between the efficiency pick and place

robots and workers?

Scope and Limitations

The researcher aims to conduct a test to determine the feasibility of using

pick and place robots for waste management. The researcher will conduct the

study at the Irineo L. Santiago National High School of Metro Dadiangas, Brgy.

Dadiangas South, General Santos City, Philippines. This study is limited to the

locality of General Santos City. Any location beyond the vicinity is not included in

the study. The results may vary depending on the lifestyle of people from other

areas.

Significance of the Study

This study is aimed to test the feasibility of using pick and place robots for

waste management. It is important for the following reasons:

For the Community

The study enables to provide information for the community about pick

and place robots, waste segregation and waste management. On the other hand,

this study also offers an advantage to people who struggle managing waste in

their households or establishments. It also provides information about How

important waste management is.

For the Teachers

This study can be used by teachers. By imparting the knowledge and

information about pick and place robots, its purposes, its effects and its use in

waste management. The teachers can also help their students deepen their

understanding about robots and why it is used today by people, industry and

some communities. Teachers may also provide information about the uses of pick

and place robots for waste management.

For the Students

This study can be a source of detailed information about the pros and

cons of using pick and place robots. They may be able to use this information in

their school activities as students could also use the knowledge of this study to

create robots that may also aid about this problem. And last, this study may

provide information for them to learn about the importance of waste

management.

And finally, For the Future Researchers

This study has plenty of information that can be used by future

researchers. They can also use this study as reference for future studies.

Furthermore, this study can help the future researchers on discovering the

capabilities of pick and place robots to its fullest extent. This study might also aid
in deepening of understanding of waste management and its possible bad

effects.

Definition of Terms

This research contains terms that may have unique definitions. To

better understand this study, the researcher provided the operational definitions

of the terms used throughout the study.

Pick and Place Robots - It refers to a robot programmed to pick up and place

specific objects into their specific containers or locations. Operationally, this is

what the researchers will create and determine its efficiency in waste

segregation.

Waste Segregation - It refers to the process of seperating or differentiating one

type of waste from another. Operationally, this is the trial researchers are going to

use to test the capabilities of pick and place robots in this kind of process. It may

also determine the efficiency of using robots in these kind of jobs.

Waste – It refers to a thrown object due to it being used, broken, decayed or

dirty. Operationally, the researchers are going to create objects that will represent

these and will be used as medium in the process of waste segregation.
