Crack Width Calculation

The document provides calculations to check the crack width of a reinforced concrete section according to IS 456-2000. It includes inputs such as the steel grade, concrete grade, section dimensions, reinforcement details, and applied moment. The neutral axis depth, steel strain, concrete strain at the face, and crack width are calculated and checked against permissible limits.

CRACK WIDTH CALCULATION AS PER IS 456-2000

INPUT FOR CRACK WIDTH CALCULATION

Grade of steel = Fe500
Grade of concrete = M30
Width of section = 1000 mm
Over all depth of section (D) = 800 mm
Min cover to longitudinal bar = 50 mm
Dia of steel bar (db) = 32 mm
Spacing of bars(S) = 150 mm
Applied moment (Un-factored ) (M) = 635 kN-m
Ast Required as per Crack Width = 4825 mm
Clear cover (dc) = = 66 mm
Effective depth of section (d) = D-dc =800-66 = 734 mm
Distance from point considered to the surface of nearest long, bar "a CR"
acr =( √( (s/2)^2+dc^2)) - (db/2) =(√((150/2)^2+66^2)-32/2 = 83.9 mm
Dist from compression face to the point at which crack width calculated "a" = 800 mm
Permissible bending stress (From table 21 IS456-2000) = 10 N/mm2
Allowable crack width = 0.2 mm
CALCULATION OF NEUTRAL AXIS DEPTH

Modular ratio (m)

=280/3σcbc =280/(3x10) = 9.33 N/mm2
Depth of neutral axis , X
= ((-m x Ast) + √((m xAst)^2+2 x b x d x Ast x m))/b
= (((-9.33x4825)+√((9.33x4825)^2+2x1000x734x9.33x4825))/1000 = 215.97 mm

CALCULATION OF STRAIN IN STEEL

Actual permissible Tensile Stress (fst)

=M / (Ast + (d - x/3 )) =(635x(10^6)/(4825x(734-215.97/3)) = 198.8 N/mm2
Allowable permissible tensile stress = 0.5 x fy = 275 N/mm2
= <275 OK
Strain in Steel ε1
= fst / Es ((a'-x)/(d-x))
=((198.8/(2x10^5)x((800-215.97)/(734-215.97)) = 0.001121 mm
ε2 =(b x (h-x)(a-x))/(3Es x As x (d-x)).
=(1000x(800-215.97)x(800-215.97))/(3x2x10^5x4825x(734-215.97)) = 0.000227 mm

Strain at the Face of Concrete εm = ε1 -ε2 =0.00112064-0.000227 = 0.000894 mm

CALCULATION OF CRACK WIDTH

Crack Width (Wcr)

= 3acr εm / (1+ (2(acr - cmin)/(h-x))
=((3x83.9x0.00089364)/(1+2x(83.9-50)/(800-215.97)) = 0.2 mm
= <0.2 OK
NOTE
When ε2 is " NEGATIVE VALUE " , then section is un cracked Wcr = 0
