Definition of Church Leadership

The term "leadership" refers to the act of directing and leading people.
Church leadership is not uncommon; however, in addition to offering advice, it
also entails how well the leader acts, interacts, and governs.
Church leaders haven't yet traditionally been regarded as servants,
although when Paul has spoken to Timothy regarding his duty as a church
leader, he emphasized numerous characteristics of a servant leader.
In this perspective, servant management is defined as leadership that
focuses on other people and is fueled by the desire to contribute first and
foremost. The leadership method was popularized in the 1970s, its roots may be
traced back to the Biblical as well as the founding of a church.
Individuals have indeed been charged as church officials with the
responsibility of being servants to the church including their parishioners.

Roles and Responsibilities of Church Leadership

You’re of course familiar with church leadership roles like the minister, pastor,
bishop, and priest. But in addition to these titles, every religious organization
needs a church board and an administration team to run the daily operations,
ensure legal compliance, and make sure that the worship team is always
communicating the church’s message. Your congregation notices when your
church leadership team is on the same page.

Before continuing, let’s clarify a few terms.

Church Leader: The head pastor/bishop/priest. This is the person who leads
the church.
Church Leadership: The rest of the team that follows the lead of the church
leader. Sometimes, the leadership will be split into teams, like the worship team,
or the youth team.

Youth pastors are paid church employees. The youth pastor has similar
church leadership roles and responsibilities as the church's senior pastor. The
youth department has a separate sanctuary and youth facilities on larger church
campuses.

Here are some of the key roles in the church, along with their core
responsibilities.

Pastor: leads the congregation, and represents the church to the public.

The pastor is the head of the church, and as such, they have a number of
important responsibilities.

These responsibilities can include:

o leading worship services

o teaching religious education classes
o providing spiritual guidance to church members
o overseeing the administration of the church

Pastors need to be excellent communicators—both in writing and in speaking.

They also need to be good at time management and organization in order to
juggle the many different tasks that are expected of them.

Deacons: act as ushers and prayer leaders, as well as take offers

Deacons fill many roles in the actual running of the church service. First, they
can act as ushers. Later, they will collect and usually count the offering with the
church treasurer. Finally, they will stand at the altar and pray with people at the
end of service when the pastor is calling for prayer or for people who need
salvation. Historically, the books of 1st and 2nd Timothy were written to a deacon
of a church that the Apostle Paul founded.

Lay Leader: in charge of coordinating between the congregation and spiritual

leaders. In just about all Christian leadership, the “spokesperson” of the church
is referred to as the lay leader. This person communicates directly with the
congregation on a regular basis. The lay leader works with the church board.
Every church has a lay leader in charge of ministry but serves underneath the
senior pastor. These leaders communicate the church’s message to the
congregation.

Worship Leader: directs the choir and band, picks the songs, and coordinates
with the pastor for consistent messaging. Worship leaders play a major role in
the success of a church service. Many qualities set worship leaders apart from
the rest of the musicians. Your worship leader is often the face of your church
as much as the head pastor. So, their attitude, demeanor, and dedication are
important. They should caringly and enthusiastically lead worship services, be
available to rehearse at any time, and minister the worship team’s needs.
The worship leader should not only have some musical talent themselves, but
they must be able to see the potential in others so that your music program can
grow.

Administration: can act as everything from the receptionist to the maintenance

crew and IT department. Church leaders are responsible for a lot of the behind-
the-scenes work that keeps the church running smoothly.
This can include tasks like:
o maintaining church records
o keeping people organized and on-task
o budgeting and church finances
o overseeing church property

These responsibilities are vital parts of a thriving church, but they’re not always
the most glamorous tasks. Church leaders often wear many hats and juggle a
lot of different balls—but it’s all worth it when they see the church community
thriving.

Church Board: the group that provides accountability for the church to the
government and possibly higher authorities in the denomination. The board
consists of members of the congregation who handle the church’s finances,
organize events, and keep the church compliant with denominational regulations
and state and federal laws. The board is a crucial part of the church
administration and leadership.

Qualities of a Christian leader

Church leadership is about serving others in accordance with Christ’s

interests so that they can see and accomplish God’s purpose for them in the
world. A church leader needs qualities that influence and morally support the
congregation, the volunteers, and others within the community. Such qualities
include moral trustworthiness, social aptitude, empathy, pastoral care, and
more.

The Apostle Paul wrote several letters to Timothy defining his role as the
leader of the church. In his teachings, Paul focused on the importance of
following the word of God and being above reproach. He expected Timothy to stay
faithful to the teachings of God regardless of the opposition that was destined to
come. Paul’s teachings remain vital for the health of the church.

Following God’s word is vital to church leadership and is not only the first
role of a steward leader; it is the most important. At the time of Paul and Timothy,
there were several versions of God’s teachings, but Paul believed he held the
truth. Paul’s teachings to Timothy were meant to help spread God’s word and
determine how the church’s leaders should act and live.

1. The leader has to have a healthy relationship with God

The discipline of prayer, worship, love for the Lord and His word is for me
the most essential quality that I look for and desire to see in a leader of
our church. He who connects with God will know how to connect with
people as well.

2. The leader has to have love for the church

The leader has to have love for the local church (for the people who come
to your church) by practically showing that love in different ways.(mainly
through some kind of service). He who serves others resembles the Lord
Jesus' heart.

3. The leader has to be a person of integrity

That means that he has a healthy family life and social life as well and has
a good testimony in and outside the church. Integrity is much more than
I can write in this article. He who runs his family well can run the church
well too, for church is the spiritual family.

4. The leader has to have social skills

That means that the leader has to be friendly and communicative, not
closed and a lone ranger. He /she has to be transparent to others in the
leadership team and respectful / helpful continually, within their power
and ability. Being a friendly leader is being like Jesus.

5. The leader has to know his / her calling

That means that the leader has to know what he /she is called to do in the
Body of Christ, so his identity in Christ has to be revealed to him so that
he / she can operate in their gifting. A leader has a specific area of
leadership (whether church eldership or small groups or worship or

children’s ministry etc). Leadership in my opinion is very specific and it is
important to be well defined.

Advantage and disadvantages of Church Leadership

Advantages of Church Leadership

Helps a lot of people in the community, they don’t discriminate with the
people they serve, their doors are always open. Leader empathizes with the
people and are willing to listen and give advices to help them ease their minds
and hearts. Loves the people they serve and see the best in them.

Disadvantages of Church Leadership

Church leaders without sufficient accountability can fall into destructive

leadership styles, immoral behavior or questionable ethical activities. Leadership
can isolate and overwhelm a person with demands on their time and energy,
making him easy fodder for the enemy of his soul. Burn out, fall out and space
out is all too common.

Church leadership is about serving others in conformity to the Lord’s interests,

so the people can see and accomplish God’s purpose for them in the world. Most
of the Church leaders are influential people, like Pope John Paul, I can still
remember when the pope went here to the Philippines, it was after a devastating
typhoon, the pope went here to hold a prayer. And it gives the people hope, you
can see that with his influence and guidance a lot of people didn’t lose hope for
themselves and their families.

Church leadership is important to a lot of people because they seek guidance

when they feel troubled or when they face a hardship in life, they turn to pastors,
priests, etc. because it gives them strength knowing there is someone rooting for
them and be there for them in times of need. A church leader is always open to
the people they serve, they don’t discriminate they will welcome you into their
arms, and warmly embrace you.

Church leaders are there to motivate and encourage us to become better, they
also bring everyone together, they signify unity in our community.

And the Good Shepard parish, shows a good example of church leader, when we
met the priests and other members of the church, the are kind and warm people,
they offered us lunch and asked ask to stay, because the weather was rainy. We
felt welcome and protected. They even ask us what we are going to do their, and
offered some help. Especially sir Fr. Wilmer Cacao one of the head priest in the
church, he possess the qualities of a good church leader.
