Thought Paper about Rizal Law (Opposition)
III. Discussions
a. Among the active groups that opposed this Rizal Bill were the Catholic Action of
the Philippines, the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Teachers guild, etc. The
Church was concerned that the bill would violate its right to freedom of conscience
and religion.
b. It affects greatly the Catholic church because Rizal's novels like the Noli Me
Tangere is viewed as a blasphemy or an act or offense of speaking sacrilegiously
about God or sacred things.
c. The reason that the Catholic Church opposed the Rizal Bill because the bill is
mandated to read and discuss even in the Catholic schools where the Catholic
church was attacked by its novels and would give a credibility to the accusation that
were false.
d. The evident corruption of Jose Rizal's genuine nature in his works, especially the
account of his life, is one of the key reasons why the Rizal Bill wasn't designed to
be institutionalized. In fact, one of his written works particularly the El
Felibusterismo made mention of the malevolent intention of these so-called
educational institutions. “Ano sa makatwid ang isang Unibersidad? Isang
institusyon para hindi matuto? Nagtitipon-tipon ba ang ilang tao sa ngalan ng
kaalaman at pagtuturo para hadlangang matuto ang iba?”.
e. Probably not much at all. The public might no longer require brainwashing because
of the way things have changed. Additionally, it would still be permissible for
schools to educate about Rizal, and it is fair to say that he will continue to be
acknowledged as a national hero.
IV. Write down your arguments.
