Assessment Scenarios
What is the purpose of assessment shown in the following assessment setting? Select
from the options below. Write a short explanation why it is so.

a. Assessment as selection or placement.

b. Assessment as instruction and providing feedback.
c. Assessment as determining what learners need to learn next.
d. Assessment as diagnosing learner’s difficulties and misconceptions.
e. Assessment as determining progress along a developmental continuum
f. Assessment as program evaluation or accountability.
1. A twelve-year old out-of-school youth who stopped during the fourth grade took a test given
by the Department of Education to go back for formal schooling. The test determines the grade
or year level appropriate for the learner.
 a. Assessment as selection or placement.
I select assessment as selection or placement as the purpose of assessment in the assessment
setting shown above because it places the 12 years old out-of-school youth to its appropriate
grade or year level. Thus, matching students learning experience to its match year level to
address learning needs.

2. Every year, a national normed assessment is given to grade 3 pupils in English, Math and
Science.
 f. Assessment as program evaluation or accountability.
The purpose shown above is to evaluate the program or its accountability which seeks to
strengthen the quality of their program to improve the student’s performance. This also used
to identify problem areas of a certain program to improve the program’s effectiveness.

3. The teacher returned a student’s Math worksheet with written comments. The teacher’s
remarks consist of a compliment and a correction. An explanation was provided concerning what
the student did correctly and incorrectly, what was accurate in the student’s work.
 b. Assessments as instruction and providing feedback.
I select it since the teacher provides feedback to his/her student through writing
comments in a student’s worksheet, showing what areas need to be improve and also giving
compliments as well. Feedback promotes growth personally and professionally if taken
seriously.

4. A math teacher gives a test towards the end of the unit. He/she will use the test items as a
starting point to discussion of conceptual problems revealed by the test.
 d. Assessment as diagnosing learner’s difficulties and misconceptions.
The teacher assesses the students by determining the area where students have the hard
time learning it through giving the test and discussing it to them for better understanding.
5. An English teacher regularly assesses students’ skills by the using probes which are brief,
easily-minute (reading) and compares each student’s growth to the rate of improvement needed
to meet learning goals.
 e. Assessment as determining progress along a developmental continuum.
With the purpose of monitoring the learner’s improvement, the teacher regularly
determines what the students know and are able to do. With that information, teachers
can plan a program that will help children continue to develop and learn.

6. A technology and Livelihood Education teacher is teaching ICT to his students. Through oral
questioning, he asked several students about the use of the Internet in searching for the
information and the computer file system. He also provided a short computer exercise. After
confirming what the students know and can do, the teacher proceeded to the next segment- how
to download files from the internet.
 c. Assessment as determining what learners need to learn next.
The teacher seeks first what the students are capable of doing then through that he/she
determines what the learners need to learn next as the student are equip with the lesson need
to instill so they can proceed to the next.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

MEME
Your goal is to think of analogies or metaphors for the role of assessment: Placement,
formative, diagnostic, summative. Use them and create your own memes. Give a brief
explanation for each meme (3-5 sentences).

ROLE OF ASSESSMENT: PLACEMENT

When you know you Summative assessments

passed the placement are waving!
assessment!

EXPLANATION:

Placement assessment is defined to be the basis to “place” students into a course, year
level, or academic program. It measures stock knowledge of someone to know whether he/she is
ready to take the course or program. Summative assessments are one of the assessments to take
every end of the grading period to measure whether the student learns what needs to be learn and
meet the educational goals like prelim exam, midterm, semi-final and final exams which are long
exams.

ROLE OF ASSESSMENT: FORMATIVE

Teacher: It’s a practice girl for the

summative assessment this coming
Friday!

That moment when you

realized that formative
assessments are usually not
graded!

Explanation:
Formative Assessment is the instructor’s way of feedback about what students learn and
not learn to enhance and improve process learning. Its purpose is to monitor student’s learning
progress, though the results are recorded but it is not used as a basis for student’s mark or not for
grading purposes. Its purpose also to improve teaching and learning while it is happening. Unlike
summative assessment which used to determine who pass or fail.

ROLE OF ASSESSMENT: DIAGNOSTIC

Explanation:

Diagnostic assessments are usually given at the beginning of the unit/topic that assess a
learner’s current knowledge base or current views on a topic/issue to be studied in the course as
Pretest:
well as correcting misconceptions in the subject. Identical pre- and post-tests are given before
and after the course to measure learning progress of the student and focus on the areas that need
20/20
improvements as preparation for summative assessment. Just like formative assessment,
diagnostic assessment is not part of student’s grades.

Posttest:
10/20
ROLE OF ASSESSMENT: SUMMATIVE

You have to take

two summative
assessments for one
day

It’s by pair!

Both of you don’t

know the answer

Explanation:

Summative assessment is used to evaluate students learning, academic achievement at the end of
a semester, project, unit or school year. It serves as the basis whether the student pass or fail on
the subject. Summative assessment evaluates the effectivity of the educational programs
informing the students what they have learned from the past lessons they tackle. Students need to
strive hard in this assessment as they know their scores in this assessment matters for their
grades.

A. Virtual Interview
The goal is to present in class the relevance of assessment particularly on classroom
decision-making and in aiding students to attain the learning outcomes. Point out important
keypoints of assessment.

Interview a seasoned teacher (during elementary or secondary years). Ask him/her about
the kind of information she/she needs and how he/she utilizes the information to make decisions
concerning his/her instruction and preparation of teaching and learning activities.

Preliminaries
 What is your name? (optional if you know the teacher)
o Marivic P. Orillosa
 How long have you been teaching?
o I have been teaching for 17 years.
 What subjects are you teaching?
o When I was still teaching in Junior High School, I used to teach “Araling
Panlipunan.” Right now, I am teaching the subject “Introduction to Philosophy of
the Human Person” and Personal Development in Senior High School.

Guide questions
 How do you gather information about students in terms of knowledge, skills and values?
What assessment tools do you use?
o I gather information about students in terms or knowledge, skills and values
through looking the learner’s profile as well as the anecdotal records. Since it is
pandemic, we cannot have the traditional face-to-face class, the assessment tools I
use in connecting with the student is through our group chat intended for our
class. We also have what we called “Module Guide/LAS (Learning Activity
Sheets) and Parents Checklist Self-Monitoring Tool. Varied assessment tools are
utilized depend on the topics like poster making, roleplay, journal and essay
writing in many others which are applicable to the topic.
 When do you conduct assessments? What type of assessments do you use?
o During this pandemic, I conduct summative assessment every two weeks.

in teaching to be able to deliver each topic to the students in the best way I can do
especially this time of pandemic where education is being challenge.
 How does assessment help you become a more effective teacher?
o Assessment is essential in teaching as well as in learning process so that we can
be able to assess and evaluate students learning progress. The result of assessment
and evaluation can be our basis to diversify our teaching method and strategy to
improve student’s achievement.
Personal views/learnings about the virtual interview with Ma’am Marivic:
Upon interviewing Mrs. Marivic, teacher by profession in Calape National High School for 17
years, I gain a lot of knowledge about the relevance of assessment in the classroom which she shares base
on her experience in teaching. She emphasizes the fact that assessment’s results so with evaluation can be
the basis to diversify a teaching method for student’s improvement in class. Assessment tools varied
depending on the topic so I realized that not all assessment tools are suitable to every topic being
introduced. As a teacher, one must think and analyze ahead the assessment tools to be utilized whether it
is effective as it will reflect to the student’s performance in the class. Moreover, I also realized that
teachers are doing their best to address the challenge being faced by the world which is the pandemic that
brought changes to our life. Since traditional face-to-face classes were being prohibited as it is against the
safety protocols to avoid the spread of COVID-19 cases, teachers with the mandate of people behind the
Commission on Higher Education think of ways to continue educating the student amidst the pandemic. I
do appreciate the efforts exerted for this new method of teaching being introduced which are through
online teaching, modular learning or blended to continue assessing the student though not physically but
still assessment takes place. Teachers really do make a difference and I consider them a hero who deserve
to be honored.

Note: Submit the result of your interview. Include your personal views/learnings about the
interview being made.

B. Essay
Explain the role of assessment to learners, teachers, parents and other stakeholders.
Consider the current situation brought about by the COVID 19 pandemic and how it affects
teachers’ mode of assessment to the students. Also cite examples of how learning is
compromised if students are not assessed the proper way.
The essay will be scored using the criteria: Content (10), Organization of ideas (5) and
Correct usage of Grammar (5)

ROLE OF ASSESSMENT

Education serves as the platform in cultivating learnings to students, providing important

knowledge, facts, norms, cultural values that are useful in facing the real-life environment. It is
the training ground of students to freely discover, instilling lessons in life and enables to
experience something significant to people or society. The goal of education is learning through
teaching students. To distinguish that its goal was achieved, assessment appears in the process.
Assessment serves as the determiner whether the learners learn what they supposed to learn or
not.

Assessment tools allows learners to be aware of how they are doing in class, thus
motivates them to study harder if they are doing poorly and inspire them to strive hard.
Assessment provides feedback to student’s performance in class to improve students’ learnings
and to determine whether the program’s objective have been met through evaluating the results.
The role of assessment to teachers is that it helps teachers gain insights if their teaching or
structural strategies has been effective and identify which areas needs modification for effective
teaching in the four-corner of the classroom. To other stakeholders like parents or guardians,
assessment is very important as it enables them to understand and appreciate their children’s
efforts, signs of progress and achievement in school.

Amidst the pandemic that we are facing right now, the Commission on Higher Education
didn’t stop in providing its goals for the millions of students hungry for knowledge. The people
behind this department improvised by introducing new way of teaching through online class,
modular learning or blended learning which is the combination of the two instead of traditional
face-to-face class. The change of method in teaching requires change in addressing the teacher’s
mode of assessment to students especially right now where in not all students are capable of
instilling knowledge by just simply reading the lessons, some needs the presence of the instructor
to fully understood it. Due to the pandemic, teachers did their best to assess the students in a way
where learning were not compromise. Weekly online class were done to monitor student’s
learnings, discussing about the topics in the module and provide feedback about the student’s
performance. Modules were given every week which serve as a new assessment tool. Modes of
assessment were change; test were given through providing links to the students to answer the
prepared test. If not assess properly, learning might be compromised in a way that student just
simply did things in school for compliance purposes only without being equipped with learnings
needed to achieve.

Indeed, assessment plays a major role in education. The primary role of assessment is to
enhance teaching and improve student learning and supports. All in all, assessment is significant
to students, teachers as well as to other stakeholders in education.
