Social Studies and Science Curriculum Guide – Upper Division

The Explorer Series Locator

The purpose of this guide is to assist teachers in meeting the Social Studies and Science
curriculum requirements by providing a list of the themes and the location of the corresponding
material in the Explorer Series books. Perhaps the best reason for using the Explorer Series is that
it allows for the teaching of Social Studies and Science to be integrated within the disciplines of
Language Arts, Math, Environmental Studies, and map skills.

When the books are used as Language Arts readers, they provide challenging material facilitating
the development of student’s comprehension skills while providing them with the concepts and
broad understanding of topics, which ensure that facts are taught and learnt within a relevant
context.

For example: By reading from the two chapters on African history and slavery in the History of
Belize, plus the information on the African continent in the Geography of Belize, while at the
same time using the World Map in the Atlas of Belize, students will gain an enhanced
understanding of the subject. This will help your students to gain a better understanding of the
specific information required by the curriculum by placing it within an already familiar
framework.

We wish you success in your undertaking and we hope that you will find this guide useful.
