COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course focuses on learning to become familiar with the layout and contents of API 653. It forms a vital
preliminary stage that will ultimately help the students understand not only the content of API 653 but also its
cross-references to the other relevant API and ASME codes.

The main emphasis of this program is on promoting safety and maintaining optimal performance through the
use of inspectors specialized in aboveground storage tanks. It provides the oil, gas and petrochemical industry
with the assurance that aboveground storage tanks inspector trained and certified under this internationally
recognized program have the required knowledge and experience for the job in the field. Course participants
aspiring to be certified by American Petroleum Institute will undergo a rigorous program to get them well versed
with the various code books and standards, including API Standards that cover inspection, repair, alteration
and relocation and reconstruction of aboveground storage tanks.

API 653 is divided into thirteen sections (sections 1 to 13), thirteen annex (annex A to X), figures and tables.
Even when taken together, these are not sufficient to specify fully a methodology for the inspection, repair
alteration, relocation and reconstruction of aboveground storage tanks. To accomplish this, other information
and guidance has to be drawn from the other codes included in your API document package.

COURSE PURPOSE

Generally, this course is essential in pressure vessels inspector. The main aim of this course is to provide the
students to obtain the technical standards covered include the full API ‘body of knowledge’ for the examination
as follows:

1. API Standard 653 Tank Inspection Repair, Alteration and Reconstruction

2. API RP 652 Lining of Aboveground Petroleum Storage Tank Bottoms
3. API RP 651 Cathodic Protection of Aboveground Petroleum Storage Tanks
4. API Standard 650 Welded Tanks for Oil Storage
5. API RP 577 Welding Inspection, and Metallurgy
6. API RP 576 Inspection of Pressure-relieving Devices
7. API RP 575 Inspection of Atmospheric and Low-Pressure Storage Tanks
8. API RP 571 Damage Mechanism Affecting Fixed Equipment in the Refining Industry
9. ASME V Non-destructive Examination
10. ASME IX Welding and Brazing Qualification, Welding Only

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

No Course Materials Learning Outcomes

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to have
1 API RP 577 knowledge and expertise in the area of Welding Inspection and Metallurgy
based on the information contained in API RP 577.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand
requirements and methods for nondestructive examination which are
2 ASME V referenced and required by other code Sections. It also includes
manufacturer's examination responsibilities, duties of authorized inspectors
and requirements for qualification of personnel, inspection and examination.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand
3 ASME IX rules relating to the qualification of welding and brazing procedures as required
by other Code Sections for component manufacture.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to improve safety,
reliability, and minimize liability of fixed equipment by learning common
damage mechanisms in the refining and petrochemical industry as covered in
4 API RP 571 API RP 571. The roles of the engineer and inspector in identifying affected
materials and equipment, critical factors, appearance of damage, prevention
and mitigation, inspection and monitoring will be covered to introduce the
concepts of service-induced deterioration and failure modes.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand the
content and application of API RP 576 that describes the inspection and repair
practices for automatic pressure-relieving devices commonly used in the oil
5 API RP 576 and petrochemical industries. This publication covers such automatic devices
as pressure-relief valves, pilot-operated pressure-relief valves, rupture disks,
and weight-loaded pressure vacuum vents.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand
description and illustration of the various types of storage tanks, new tank
construction standards, maintenance practices, reason for inspection, causes
6 API RP 575
of deterioration, frequency of inspection, method of inspection, inspection of
repair, preparation of records and reports, safe and efficient operation and leak
prevention method.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand the
guidance on achieving effective corrosion control in aboveground storage
7 API RP 652 tanks by application of tank bottom lining. It contains information pertinent to
the selection of lining materials, surface preparation, lining application, cure,
and inspection of tank bottom linings for existing and new storage tanks.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand
8 API RP 651 procedures and practices for achieving effective corrosion control on
aboveground storage tank bottoms through the use of cathodic protection.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand the
minimum requirements for material, design, fabrication, erection, and
inspection for vertical, cylindrical, aboveground, closed- and open-top, welded
9 API 650 storage tanks in various sizes and capacities for internal pressures
approximating atmospheric pressure (internal pressures not exceeding the
weight of the roof plates), but a higher internal pressure is permitted when
additional requirements are met.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand the
minimum requirement for maintaining the integrity of such tanks after they have
10 API 653 been placed in service and addresses inspection, repair, alteration, relocation
and reconstruction.
