Unique Earth and Earth Subsystems

This lesson plan aims to teach grade 11/12 students about the uniqueness of Earth and its subsystems that support life. The objectives are for students to describe Earth's characteristics that support life, explain how its subsystems support life, and appreciate Earth's uniqueness. The lesson will engage students in brainstorming Earth's unique traits and drawing symbols of its four subsystems - atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere. The teacher will then explain each subsystem and how Earth is uniquely habitable. Students will summarize the subsystems in a concept map and be evaluated on enumerating Earth's unique traits and drawing their own concept map.

LESSON PLAN IN EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE

GRADE 11/12

LEARNING COMPETENCY:
 Recognize the uniqueness of Earth, being the only planet in the solar system with properties necessary to
support life (S11/12 ES-Ia-e3)
 Explain that the Earth consists of four subsystems, across whose bounderies matter and energy flow (S11/12
ES-Ia-e4)

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session, the students should be able to:
a. Describe the characteristics of Earth that are necessary to support life;
b. Explain how earth subsystems can support life; and
c. Appreciate the unique characteristics of Earth.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Content: Unique Earth
Earth Subsystems
B. Reference: Earth and Life Science by Sia et. Al.

C. Materials: Ppt presentation (Laptop, HDTV)
Manila Paper and Pentelpen
D. Process Skills: Communication, Critical Thinking, Collaboration
E. Values Integration: Cooperation, Acceptance of opinion, respect

III. PROCEDURE
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer and checking of Attendance
2. Review of the previous lesson
3. Reading of objectives

B. Lesson Proper 5 E’s Instructional Plan

1. ENGAGEMENT
 Brainstorming through Group Activity
 In a manila paper, list at least 10 unique characteristics of Earth
 Presentation of the output

2. EXPLORATION
 Group Activity
 In the same group, the students will draw a symbol that best represents the earth subsystem
assigned to them. Below the symbol, they will write characteristics of these subsystem.
Number Earth Subsystems
1 Atmosphere
2 Geosphere
3 Hydrosphere
4 Biosphere

3. EXPLANATION
 Reporting of the Earth subsystems
 The teacher will discuss how the Earth is unique and the subsystems of the earth
o Atmosphere
o Geosphere
o Hydrosphere
o Biosphere
4. ELABORATION
 Summarize the Earth Subsystems through presenting the Concept Map

5. EVALUATION
 ENUMERATE 5 characteristics of Earth that makes it unique and habitable (5points)
 DRAW a concept map about the Earth Systems (15points)
