Lab 2 - Myfcd N Book

This lab aims to calculate the nutrient composition of a friend's daily food intake using two methods: manually using a nutrition book and using Nutritionist Pro software. Students will calculate 10 nutrients for the food intake using each method and compare the results, calculating any percentage differences between the values obtained. They will then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the manual vs. software methods of nutrient analysis.

STUDIES FEM 3202: NUTRITION, HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT

LAB 2: NUTRIENT COMPOSITION ANALYSIS

Objective:

To calculate the nutrients composition of food intake by using two methods:

i. Manual calculation – utilizing the ‘Nutrient Composition of Malaysian

Foods’ book
ii. Computer Software – Nutritionist Pro

Method:

A. ‘Nutrient Composition of Malaysian Foods’ Book

1. Calculate the nutrients composition of your friend’s food intake (24

Hours Dietary Recall data) by using the ‘Nutrient Composition of
Malaysian Foods’ book. Calculate:

i. Total Energy (kcal)

ii. Proteins (g)
iii. Fats (g)
iv. Carbohydrates (g)
v. Calcium (mg)
vi. Iron (mg)
vii. Vitamin C (mg)
viii. Vitamin A (µg)
ix. Riboflavin (B2) (mg)
x. Niacin (B3) (mg)

(Refer table in Appendix 1)

B. Nutritionist Pro Software

2. Calculate the nutrients composition of your friend’s food intake (24

Hours Dietary Recall data) using Nutritionist Pro Software. Calculate:

i. Total Energy (kcal)

ii. Proteins (g)
iii. Fats (g)
iv. Carbohydrates (g)
v. Calcium (mg)
vi. Iron (mg)
vii. Vitamin C (mg)
viii. Vitamin A (µg)
ix. Riboflavin (B2) (mg)
x. Niacin (B3) (mg)

3. Print out the results for your report.

4. Compare the results of manual calculation and software calculation,
and calculate the difference percentage of the selected nutrients
composition as listed above.
5. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods in
order to calculate the nutrition composition.
